Found an old book of my artwork buried in the studio. I think this was around 2010.

Completely different style back then. Everything was built in Photoshop and Illustrator, no Procreate, no iPad, just a mouse and a lot of patience.

I still love these pieces. But flipping through it, what hits me is how much the work has evolved, and how you can already see little glimpses of where I was trying to go. The seeds were there. I just didn’t know it yet.

If you’re early in your creative journey, keep the old stuff. Future you will want to see the trail.

The house goes quiet around 9. That’s when my second shift starts.

I’m tired most nights. I still show up, because drawing isn’t the thing I do after the real work. It is the real work.

One of my favorite things to do is pull pieces from different collections and mash them together into something completely new. It still amazes me how certain elements just click, like they were always meant to share a canvas.

I’m Dave. I draw seafood, botanicals, cocktails, and the coast. Seventeen collections so far, every line by hand. I’m not trying to be loud about it. I add just enough detail to make something feel real, then I stop. Find calm. Live boldly. Follow along if that sounds like your kind of work.

Luck and light.

A rusted horseshoe holds up a lantern that’s still burning. That’s the whole idea. You bring the luck, you keep the light on, and you figure the rest out as you go.

Made this one for the wall above your desk. Or over the bed. Or wherever the cinder block needs help.

Painted the office this weekend.

Used to hate it. Now it’s headphones on, take my time, let it be what it is.

Same thing happened with my artwork. I spent years rushing designs out the door. Now I’d rather sit with an idea and figure out why I’m making it before I make it.
