Sad to hear of the passing of one of my favorite illustrators, Gary Kelley.

I first saw his work in my undergrad studies at CSU Chico in the 80’s and loved the power and mastery of the pastels he was famous for… and then was in awe as I watched him work as one of my instructors in the Master’s program at Syracuse University in the late 90’s. His colorful imagery and strong portrait work was a big influence for me. He was honored in the industry by being inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2007.

Rest in peace, Gary... your influence lives on.

Seems appropriate for ‘25… as we’ve seen lots of changes (both good and bad.) Hoping you’re all ending the year on a high note! As for me, I’m anticipating lots of adventures in ‘26.

Going through storage and seeing work I did 25 years ago for my Illustration Master’s Program at Syracuse University… I think the project was to pick four illustrators (from four different decades) and recreate a particular subject in their style… is an eye opener. In part because this was before I owned a computer, so all done in traditional mediums (watercolor, pastel, and color pencils.)
