Did this donor Xbox connector actually survive removal? 👀

Before installing a donor Xbox ribbon connector, we need to make sure it survived the removal process.

A few connections looked uneven after working with the iron, so we inspected the anchor posts and carefully cleaned the connector.

The important part? We brushed in the direction of the pins instead of across them to avoid stressing the connections.

After a final inspection and wipe-down, the connector still looks good—and it’s already tin-ready. ✅

Now we can move on to the damaged connector on the original Xbox motherboard.

Our customer didn't want a new pair of JLabs — they wanted to save the pair they already loved.

So we're giving these JLab Epic Open Sport earbuds another chance. 🔧🎧

The damaged battery wire has almost no slack left, so every millimeter matters. We carefully removed the insulation, applied flux, and tinned the braided wire before reconnecting it.

It may look like a tiny repair…

…but this is exactly why we do what we do.

The connector finally came FREE!

Removing a donor connector isn't just about adding heat.

Too much heat = damage.
Too little = the solder won't flow.

We used hot air and a preheater to gradually bring the board up to temperature—until the connector released cleanly. 👏🔧

Now the recovered connector is ready for the Xbox board that actually needs the repair.

One drop was enough to break the battery connection. 😳🎧

These JLab Epic Open Sport earbuds look fine from the outside—but underneath, a tiny battery connection was ripped loose.

The tricky part?

Before soldering anything back, we have to figure out exactly where those two wires belong. 🔬

Microscope on.
Connection exposed.
3.7V battery going back where it belongs.

The smartest part of this Qolsys installation happened before the panel was even installed.

This was a brand-new build, so we had something you don't always get with an existing property:

the chance to plan everything from the start.

Before the drywall went up, we ran cables from the main network panel to the doors, windows, motion sensors, and siren.

The wired reed sensors handle the doors, while the motion sensors and siren are hardwired directly into the panel.

We also planned the network box location, labeled everything, and kept the wiring organized before pairing the system with the Qolsys Wireless 16F.

Why combine both?

The hardwired sensors give us a solid foundation, while the wireless side gives the homeowner room to add compatible devices later.

That's the part of installation people don't always see.

The connector was supposed to come off cleanly… then two legs moved. 👀

This is why donor board work isn't always as straightforward as it looks.

We're removing an Xbox ribbon/FPC connector that we need to save for an upcoming repair.

First, we add flux and work with 183°C solder to help lower the melting point of the existing solder. The first connections release nicely with solder wick.

Then two connector legs move.

Instead of forcing it, we change the approach and bring in hot air to release the remaining connections while keeping heat away from the flex and plastic housing as much as possible.

Sometimes the best repair move is knowing when to stop and change your method.

The connector is installed. Is the repair actually finished? Not yet. 👀

One of the easiest mistakes in board repair is assuming the job is done just because the replacement connector looks secure.

With this iPad 7 charging port repair, the final inspection is just as important as the installation itself.

We go back over the solder joints, check for bridges, touch up anything that needs refinement, and make sure the connector is making proper contact with the logic board.

Because sometimes, those extra few minutes at the microscope are what separate a reliable repair from a device that ends up back on the bench.

Getting the connector off is only half the battle. 👀
The donor board is ready.

Now comes the tricky part—removing the connector without damaging it.

There are anchor points, ground connections, and multiple pins holding it to the board. We first work on the larger connections using a soldering iron and solder wick.

But the biggest concern?

🔥 Heat.

Since the connector has a plastic housing, too much heat could damage the part we're trying to recover.

That's where low-melt solder comes in. It lowers the melting point, meaning we don't need as much heat during removal.

And that's an important part of donor board work:

Removing the part isn't the finish line.

The recovered connector still needs to be in good enough condition to use in the actual repair.
