Bigger Calls and Smaller Balls: Howler Monkeys Compensate for Small Te**es

In this latest study, the researchers found that there's a tradeoff between two traits evolved by different howler monkey species. If the males have larger go**ds, they produce more s***m but have a less-deep howl to attract mates. If the howler monkey has a large vocal-tract hyoid bone to produce a deep call to scare competitors and attract females, they have smaller go**ds.
"They are different solutions to the same problem," said Leslie Knapp, one of the researchers, in a news release. "It is not possible to produce a large hyoid and large te**es. This probably arose because individuals within one species produced more offspring if they had large hyoids. And in another species they were more successful if they had large te**es."

Google Teams Up With Udacity To Introduce A New Tech Entrepreneurship Nanodegree

Google, during its I/O 2015 developer conference in May had announced a partnership with Udacity to launch a six-course Android Development Nanodegree. The company wanted to allow developers to learn how to write apps for Google’s mobile operating system.

Surprisingly, these new Nanodegrees turned out to the most popular ones by Udacity, attracting more than 300,000 people to enrol in the courses. The web giant wanted anyone, technical or not, to learn not just the basics of how to build Android, iOS, and web apps, but also to explain what it takes to design, validate, prototype, monetize, and market app ideas.

As a part of that initiative, Google has now introduced a new Nanodegree, which will consist of a Tech Entrepreneurship certificate, access to coaches, guidance on your project, help staying on track and career counseling. If all you want is the content, quizzes, and projects, all of that is available online for free at udacity.com/google.

The following courses are what you can choose from:

Product design: Learn Google’s Design Sprint methodology, Ideation & Validation, UI/UX design and gathering the right metrics.
Prototyping: Experiment with rapid-low and high-fidelity prototyping on mobile and the Web using online tools.
Monetization: Learn how to monetize your app and how to set up an effective payment funnel.
App marketing: Build a brand, prepare for launch, and make a plan for attaining and retaining customers.
How to get your startup started: Find out whether you really need venture capital funding, evaluate build vs. buy, and learn simple ways to monitor and maintain your startup business effectively.
The company says that it has has also teamed up with “the most successful thought leaders” to give students better guidance. Author of Crossing the Chasm Geoffrey Moore, Optimizely cofounder Pete Koomen, Y Combinator partners Aaron Harris and Kevin Hale, Product Hunt cofounder Nir Eyal, and YouTube cofounder Steve Chen are all aboard.

With about six to 10 hours per week, students will apparently be able to complete the Tech Entrepreneur Nanodegree in four to seven months. Though, there isn’t a time limit and you can take as long as you want. Udacity says that if you finish within 12 months, you’ll get 50 percent of your money back. Also, Google will invite the top 10 graduates to to pitch their final app and idea to venture capitalists.

Pioneer releases high-resolution personal stereo

TOKYO, Oct 20 — The Pioneer XDP-100R can handle most 32-bit resolution formats, boasts a premium aluminium case and, at US$500 (RM2,130), is only the same price as an iPhone, but will that be enough to get audiophiles to listen?

This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Sony Walkman and this month, the original iPod turns 14. And while both may have been the must-have tech devices of their day, they’ve also been more or less completely consigned to the history books thanks to the ubiquity and flexibility of the smartphone, a decent set of headphones and, most recently, a subscription to one of the myriad streaming services from Spotify to, of course, Apple Music.

And yet, standalone music players are proving to be stubbornly holding on. The growing popularity of streaming has bought with it a growing concern, among the audio-obsessed community at least, that sound quality is suffering.

In Japan, there is still a strong niche demand for music players that can deliver better than CD-quality music playback, and clearly this need for higher fidelity is not confined to Southeast Asia.

Rock legend Neil Young is so disappointed in the digital compression of both streaming and MP3s that he took to Kickstarter to raise funds for his high-resolution, 32-bit music platform — The Pono Player and Pono Store.

And Sony has launched a new digital Walkman, the NW-ZX2, which from its gold-plated internal wiring to milled aluminium exterior is focused purely on delivering the best possible sound. However, with a retail price of over US$1,200 it’s only for the most affluent audiophiles.

Pioneer’s high-resolution player runs Android and promises 10 hours of battery life, plus compatibility with most lossless (i.e., high definition) file formats, from FLAC to DSD. It has 32GB of on-board storage, which isn’t huge considering how large 32-bit music files can be, but it supports expansion via two MicroSD card slots so different cards could be used for different artists or playlists, etc.

As for price, it sits very nicely in the middle. It will cost the equivalent of US$500 when it goes on sale, in November, initially in Japan, making it US$100 more than a Pono Player and US$700 less than Sony’s flagship NW-ZX2. — AFP-Relaxnews

Pokemon GO! Developer Niantic Is Honored To Work With Nintendo

Niantic has been given the opportunity to develop one of Nintendo’s first big mobile titles with Pokemon GO!, and they also gained a massive investment of $20 million from Nintendo and Pokemon Co., with a another $10 million on the cards from Google. So how does this developer feel about working with Nintendo, the Pokemon Company, and Google? Unsurprisingly, they are feeling pretty positive about the experience, as the CEO said in a recent interview with TechCrunch.

Terrific. It’s an honor to have the support and insights of a company that has brought decades of joy to people through their IP, game design, technology innovation. They share our same values of using innovation and play to bring people together. We have so much respect for Nintendo, as well as The Pokémon Company and of course Google. We couldn’t ask for a better group of companies.
