Humanoid robots may still feel futuristic, but they are steadily moving closer to becoming part of everyday life.
Over time, we are likely to see humanoid systems working in warehouses, hospitals, offices, retail environments, homes, and other public spaces. These machines will not simply be mechanical devices. Many will rely on artificial intelligence, computer vision, voice recognition, sensors, cloud services, and autonomous decision-making.
That creates an entirely new security and safety challenge.
A traditional software vulnerability may expose data or disrupt a service. A vulnerability in a humanoid robot could also affect how the machine moves, what it sees, who it listens to, or how it interacts with people and its physical environment.
Security testing will therefore need to go far beyond checking applications and networks. It may include:
• Testing whether voice or visual instructions can be manipulated
• Assessing unauthorized access to movement and control systems
• Evaluating how the robot responds to conflicting or malicious commands
• Reviewing privacy risks from cameras, microphones, and collected data
• Testing safety controls, emergency stops, and human override mechanisms
• Assessing how the AI behaves in unexpected real-world situations
Humanoid robotics will require cybersecurity, AI safety, physical safety, and engineering teams to work together from the beginning.
As these systems become more capable and more common, testing cannot be treated as a one-time activity before launch. It will need to continue throughout the robot’s entire lifecycle.
The future of robotics will not only depend on what these machines can do.
It will depend on whether we can trust them to do it safely.
