$500 PMPM. If you work with healthcare benefits data, you’ve probably seen a number like that many times. But what does it actually tell you? PMPM stands for per member per month, and healthcare analysts use it for an important reason.

Imagine:

Company A spends $12 million on healthcare.
Company B spends $8 million.

Which company has higher healthcare costs?

We can’t tell from total spending alone. Company A may cover twice as many people. One company may have added members during the year while the other lost them. Total dollars don’t account for those differences. PMPM creates a common denominator by relating costs to the number of months people were actually enrolled. That makes comparisons across populations and time periods more meaningful. But PMPM is not “the cost of the average member.” It is a normalized measure. Like any measure, we need to understand how it was calculated before deciding what it tells us.

Healthcare Analytics Foundations℠ teaches the concepts behind commonly used measures, not simply how to find them in a report. Knowing what PMPM stands for is easy. Understanding what it means is where analysis begins.

Healthcare data rarely lives in one place. Medical claims may be in one system, pharmacy data in another and eligibility somewhere else. Clinical information, HR data, point solutions and wellness programs add more pieces. The challenge isn’t simply gaining access to all of it. It’s connecting the data well enough to understand the complete picture.

A change in cost may make more sense when viewed alongside utilization. Utilization may look different when population changes are considered. Program participation means more when it can be connected to outcomes. Each source can tell us something. The connections between them can tell us much more. This was one of the themes that emerged from our conversations with healthcare leaders: better analytics isn’t always about collecting more data. Sometimes it’s about making better use of the data an organization already has.

The question isn’t only, “What data do we have?” It’s also, “What could we understand if we connected it?”

Explore the findings in our executive summary, Off the Record: Future Challenges & Next-Generation Analytics Needs:

Ever wonder what happens to your data after it arrives? We decided to take a little trip through the data pipeline. From ingestion and validation through integration, analytics and ultimately reporting, there’s a lot that happens before data becomes something you can actually use. So we built a tiny submarine and sent it in. Come along for the ride.

An interesting number is only the starting point.

In one of our musculoskeletal analyses, 28% of claimants accounted for 54% of allowed healthcare costs. That led to more questions: Which conditions were driving the costs? What changed as disease progressed? Were other conditions contributing?

Following those questions led us to osteoarthritis. We found that 70% of episodes were in the early stages, but they represented only 46% of osteoarthritis costs. We also saw depression and anxiety utilization increase as disease severity progressed.

Now we knew much more than “MSK is expensive.” That’s the thinking behind Analytic Recipes℠. They provide a structured way to keep following the data rather than stopping at the first finding, and they can be implemented in the analytics environment you already use. How far can your current analytics take you once you start following the clues?

Healthcare Analytics Foundations℠

A healthcare report may tell you that costs increased.

But can it tell you why?

Understanding healthcare data requires more than reading a dashboard. It means knowing how the healthcare system works, how data is created, and what questions to ask before drawing conclusions.

That’s why Healthcare Analytics Foundations℠ begins with the fundamentals—helping professionals build the knowledge they need to interpret healthcare data with greater confidence.

Healthcare data is everywhere.

Claims.

Pharmacy.

Eligibility.

HR systems.

Point solutions.

Wellness programs.

The challenge isn't finding data anymore.

The challenge is connecting it in a way that helps people make better decisions.

That's one of the biggest themes we heard while researching Off the Record: Future Challenges & Next-Generation Analytics Needs.

Off the Record: Future Challenges & Next-Generation Analytics Needs

What happens when you stop asking people to sell... and simply ask them to talk?

That's exactly what we did.

We spoke with benefits leaders, consultants, health plans, and analytics professionals about the challenges they're facing today—and where they believe healthcare analytics is headed next.

The result is Off the Record: Future Challenges & Next-Generation Analytics Needs.

The conversations revealed a common theme: organizations aren't struggling to collect data. They're struggling to turn that data into meaningful action.

If you're interested in where healthcare analytics is headed—and what your peers are thinking—we invite you to download the Executive Summary.

🧩 Imagine trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing.

You might recognize part of the picture.

But you'd never see the whole story.

Healthcare data can feel the same way.

Claims data tells one part of the story.

Pharmacy data adds another.

Eligibility, HR systems, wellness programs, and point solutions each contribute another piece.

Looking at just one source can lead to incomplete conclusions. The real value comes from bringing the pieces together to understand what's happening—and why.

That's when healthcare data becomes truly actionable.

💬 What's the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect healthcare data from different sources?

🧭 Imagine driving with a GPS that only showed where you are...

It tells you your current location, but it doesn't explain:

How you got there.
Why you're there.
Which route will get you where you want to go.

Healthcare reports can be the same way.

A dashboard might tell you healthcare costs increased or utilization changed, but those numbers are only the starting point.

The real value comes from asking questions like:

✔️ Why did costs change?

✔️ What's driving the trend?

✔️ What should we do next?

Healthcare analytics isn't just about reporting numbers—it's about using those numbers to make better decisions.

That's the kind of thinking we believe leads to better outcomes.

Big news from last week! Our co-founders Mary Henderson and Denise Zeman had the incredible opportunity to present Outcomes Analyzer℠ at the World 50 Health Plan Accelerator Summit — and the response blew us away.

For those who aren't familiar with what we've been building — Outcomes Analyzer helps health plans finally get an honest, independent answer to the question every benefits leader is asking: which programs are actually working, and which ones just say they are?

We walked in not knowing what to expect. We walked out with something we'll never forget.

Thank you to the World 50 Health Plan Accelerator team and to every health plan leader who engaged so thoughtfully with our work. The best is yet to come!
