Mercury is making an early-morning appearance—but it will not wait around for you.
On August 2, the smallest planet reaches its greatest distance from the sunrise glare during this morning cycle. Look low toward the east-northeast before sunrise. A clear horizon matters, and binoculars can help while the Sun remains safely below the horizon.
It will not look enormous or dramatic. It will look like a modest point of light sitting low in the dawn—and finding it is half the fun.
