Just launched a new web site for Rex of Whiteway Memorial Library. Have you heard of Rex? He was a pure-bred Samoyed who lived from 1946-1957. He led an adventurous life in the mountains beginning at 9-12 months of age as lead sled dog on a team that ran the U.S. mail over the 7,200 foot Targhee Pass in the winter.
Over the course of his lifetime, he participated in over 30 human rescues in the Sierras, including pulling out three downed planes near the Truckee, California airfield in 1949. Rex was one of the two lead dogs who delivered Dr. Nelson to the 226 passengers and crew of the City of San Francisco streamliner train that was snowbound in California’s Yuba Gap in January, 1952. Pretty amazing.
