NMP 2.28.1 is out! It now supports a new Adaptive Loudness Compensation (ALC) DSP which could be found in Neutron HiFi DAC V1 (the same DSP core). In addition, implemented support for WebP album-art, improved HiBy DAPs support and, of course, fixes...

In this release we’ve ported ALC DSP found previously in Neutron HiFi DAC V1 directly into the player software.

What ALC DSP does: Its full name is Adaptive Loudness Compensation (ALC). It intelligently adjusts the frequency response based on the volume level, ensuring your music sounds rich and full-bodied even at lower volumes (where the human ear usually loses track of bass and treble). It's essentially "smart" loudness that respects your dynamics.

DAC V1 is now supported by Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch game consoles!

STK can easily replace FreeRTOS and is featuring higher performance with Os optimization, MUCH lower source code footprint, does not require board-specific porting - so you can make it working on any board with a compatible MCU.

🎧 New Neutron HiFi DAC V1 DSP feature - Adaptive Loudness Compensation (ALC) DSP 🎶

We’re excited to introduce a major enhancement in the latest firmware update - Adaptive Loudness Compensation (ALC), a new DSP effect designed to bring out the full richness of your music at any listening volume.

🔍 What is Adaptive Loudness Compensation (ALC)?

ALC is an intelligent DSP system that automatically adjusts the frequency balance of your audio depending on the playback level. It’s based on how our ears perceive sound - at lower volumes, we naturally lose sensitivity to deep bass and airy treble. ALC compensates for this by gently boosting the low and high frequencies when you turn the volume down, keeping your music’s tonal balance consistent and natural.

⚙️ How It Works

The ALC DSP uses device volume level (dB) and applies an adaptive equalization curve that mimics the equal-loudness contours of human hearing (see ISO 226:2003 for more details).

At high volumes, the response remains flat for accurate sound reproduction.

As the volume decreases, ALC progressively enhances sub-bass, bass, and brilliance frequencies.

The result: every note and detail stays audible and musical, even at quiet listening levels.

See the attached plot for the ALC frequency curves at various device volumes starting from 0 dB (corresponds to the plot at -4 dB level) with -4 dB steps further down to -24 dB - you’ll notice how low and high bands are dynamically shaped as output level decreases and follow the equal-loudness contours.

Firmware 61: Neutron HiFi DAC V1 – PEQ DSP got way better!

The latest firmware update brings a significant enhancement to the Parametric EQ (PEQ) DSP engine.

● PEQ DSP math was upgraded from 32-bit floating point to the fixed-point processing for a higher precision math.
● This change reduces quantization noise considerably at low frequencies.

With Firmware 57 Neutron HiFi DAC V1 got new unparalleled sonic performance. While sounds like magic it is the reality provided by the unique feature of ESS DAC chips which allows to fine-tune hardware in post-production stage when all components are installed and affecting the audio signal.

New measurements show much improved SNR/DNR in comparison to the initial ASR's review that means more space available for a sound wave with real audio content. The lower 2-nd and 3-rd harmonics, the more space is available for sound.
