Good evening all,
We wanted to write a final goodbye from us at the Rensselaer Science Fiction and Anime Association at RPI. Genericon for the last several years was run by RSFA and hosted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus. RSFA and the RPI Union will no longer be owning or hosting Genericon. It has been a long few years and we have come to the decision that doing Genericon as we had in the past will not be feasible. If anyone would like to create a new convention unaffiliated with RPI in the area to keep the nerdy spirit of the Capital Region alive, we would love to see it. We at RSFA are starting to think about and plan a smaller convention every year that would be solely for RPI students, and are excited to have some of the convention spirit returning to campus in the future. Thank you for all of the support throughout the last several years.

Due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, Genericon is cancelled for 2021. We are continuing to monitor information and hopefully be able to see everyone for Genericon in 2022.

Greetings everyone!

Genericon is working with Jennard Cosplays & Supernova Cosplay to run an online convention stream this weekend. This is different from Genericon 33, which is currently scheduled for next year.

More information can be found on our website.

Hello con-goers,

Our Admin Staff for Genericon has been in discussions with the RPI administration - and after much thought and deliberation, we have decided to cancel Genericon 33 (2020) due to the health risk posed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Given the information available, we believe that hosting Genericon would be a major health risk to both the campus and our attendees. The RPI administration is strongly advising the cancellation of all events that would have more than 50 people. We are expecting RPI to issue a statement soon with more information.
We will be refunding all pre-registration tickets and application fees via Eventbrite. We deeply regret not being able to host Genericon this year, but we believe the safety concerns are too great. We’re planning to use this extra time to make next year’s Genericon even better. We’re also looking into bringing back Betacon in the Fall.

Thank You for your understanding,
The Genericon Staff

Updated security policy: you gave us feedback and we hope we've answered your concerns! We really appreciate feedback and if you'd like to have even more of an impact on the convention, please consider volunteering or joining our Discord!

In order to enter the convention, you must have a valid Government or school issued identification card with your legal name and your photo on it. The basic information on your card will be recorded by an RPI Public Safety officer on an encrypted and air gapped laptop that will only be accessed by Public Safety officers. Your ID will not be scanned or photographed. The laptops will be stored in a secure location with Public Safety. The only information recorded will be: the legal name, state issued/type of ID/school, the last four digits of an identification number from the ID, date of birth, and the time that the officer recorded the data. For questions about the type of cyber security used, please email [email protected], as our Chair will be handling the cyber security personally. [All of this data will be stored on an air gapped system (no network connectivity) on an encrypted device (LUKS, AES-256, or FIPS compliant device).]

The information will be held on to for 30 days after the convention for posterity, then securely deleted. If a problematic individual is identified and the data is deemed necessary to keep, only the data of the individual will be kept an additional 15 days, the rest will still be deleted after 30 days. It will only be shared with law enforcement agencies if necessary, and will not be used in any other ways. After a Public Safety officer records the information from your ID, they will give you a sticker with a number on it, which will correspond to your data entry and appear on your badge. This means if anyone is reported to Public Safety for violating our rules, they can be identified by only the number, and we no longer need to put legal names on the badges. If you intend to come to Genericon to drink alcohol and harass others, please do not attend.

Pictured below is the method that RPI Public Safety Officers will be using to record your information from your ID, and below that are two sample badges: one that is not filled in and the other that is filled in completely. (The actual badges will be designed more excitingly.)

EDIT: THIS POST IS NOW OUTDATED, BUT WE WILL BE KEEPING IT. PLEASE REFER TO MORE RECENT POSTS FOR THE UPDATED POLICY.

We apologize about our policy requiring legal names matching your ID on your badge. Initially, our post said to have it on the front of your badge, now we have adjusted it to say the front or the back. The reasoning behind this is that RPI Public Safety told us that they wanted to have IDs on file in case an attendee misbehaved. They said we should require the same name on the badge so they could match the ID to the badge holder, and people may be inclined to not misbehave if they had their name printed on their badge. This seemed very logical to us and we did not consider alternatives at the time. Neither they nor we had considered those who do not wish to use the name on their ID and we will be working with them about what we can do. It was in no way meant to be discriminatory. We're very sorry, we're just trying to comply with Public Safety and they're just trying to make the event safe.

Tl;dr we're going to talk to Public Safety and try to get some badges for those who do not want to display the name that corresponds to their ID, while still maintaining the safety of the event.

EDIT: THIS POST IS NOW OUTDATED, PLEASE REFER TO OUR MORE RECENT POSTS FOR THE UPDATED POLICY. WE WILL BE KEEPING THIS POST, BUT IT IS NO LONGER CORRECT.

Listen up, detectives! Genericon ###III has been confirmed for March 21-22 with the following hours: Saturday 8AM-7PM & Sunday 8AM-5PM. There will be no Genericon events on the Friday before the convention weekend, but early badge pickup will be available during the preceding week in the RPI Union like usual.

Although the vast majority of Genericon attendees are respectful and amazing, several issues have arisen over the past few years with unacceptable behavior from attendees violating our rules. Our host school, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), has a first priority as a school not as a convention center. As such, they did not want to continue hosting Genericon in its previous form because of the aforementioned issues and the limitations of running a convention on the campus itself. This will mean that in order for Genericon to stay on RPI campus, the Institute has told us that there will be an increased security presence and no more night events at Genericon.

Worry not! We have managed to fit almost the same amount of exciting Genericon programming, but we have reduced ticket prices for this year anyway. (Friendly reminder that tickets are free if you volunteer to work or if you are selected to be a panelist/GM/contest winner.) Tickets for Genericon 33 be priced as follows:
RPI Student: $10
Child under 18 accompanied by an Adult over 21: $10
Pre-Registered Adult: $15
Adult-at-the-Door Adult: $25

In order to enter the convention, you must have a valid Government identification card with your name and your photo on it. A photocopy of the card will be made for our records. Your badge will now show your legal name (we are currently working with Public Safety as to how we can do this without showing the name on your ID, which people may no longer identify with) and a preferred name/nickname you have selected (if desired). We’re doing this to record individuals who are not in compliance with Genericon or RPI’s policy so we may report them to Campus Public Safety or local Troy PD. If you intend to come to Genericon to drink alcohol and harass others, please do not attend.

We will also not be allowing any cosplay that is covering the face, except for use during Cosplay contests/events and only inside of those events. This is to ensure that no masked individuals will be able to harass others without consequence. Makeup and hats are permitted, but the individual must have their face showing enough that they are recognizable by their photo ID.

RPI has a strict no alcohol policy, and it especially applies to Genericon. Alcohol is not allowed at the event or on campus, even if you are over 21. Any person found in possession of alcohol or under the influence of alcohol will immediately be escorted off campus and banned from attending Genericon in the future. Drugs are not allowed at the event (or in general). Any person found in possession of or under the influence of drugs will be escorted to Troy PD and banned from attending Genericon in the future. RPI is a smoke free campus, smoking is not allowed on campus but is permitted on 15th St.

Forms for all normal applications will open very soon. We apologize for the increased security measures, but we cannot make exceptions to them. If a significant security issue occurs, Genericon may not be allowed to continue operating on RPI campus, so please adhere to all rules for all of our benefit. Please make sure that your ID will be valid during Genericon if you wish to attend, because we will turn away individuals without valid ID. If you have any questions, please message our page or email either [email protected] or [email protected].
