A moment of pride for South African healthcare!
Tygerberg Hospital, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University have made history by successfully removing a kidney from a living donor using robotic-assisted surgery, a first for South Africa. The surgery, is called a donor nephrectomy.
Behind this groundbreaking achievement was an exceptional team led by Dr Danelo du Plessis who is a urologist, and joint staff member of Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University, whose expertise, compassion and commitment made this life-changing procedure possible.
As Dr Matodzi Mukosi, CEO of Tygerberg Hospital, noted, this achievement reflects the extraordinary skill of South Africa's healthcare professionals and the life-changing impact of medical innovation.
