​​Did you know the humble computer mouse started its life as a block of wood with a cord? 🪵🔌

​Back in the early 1960s, a visionary named Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) was trying to find a better way for humans to interact with computers than just typing.

𝗛𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸.

​In 1964, his chief engineer, Bill English, built the very first prototype. It wasn't sleek plastic; it was a rough wooden box with one button. Instead of a ball or a laser, this original mouse used two little wheels inside to track X and Y movement across the desk.

​The team nicknamed it the "mouse" because the connecting cable trailed out of the back, looking just like the tail of a rodent. 🐁 Its formal, boring name was the "X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System," but thankfully, "mouse" stuck!

​Five years later, Engelbart debuted his invention at a famous presentation now known as "The Mother of All Demos." Though he never personally profited from the invention (the patent expired before the mouse became a huge commercial success), he completely changed how we interact with technology.
