Data Centre Cabling: Standards and Structure

Data centres are the life-blood of today’s enterprises. IT managers spend much time and expense designing and implementing systems that not only meet the technology requirements of the business, but at the same time reduce any risk of downtime. Often the cabling, or physical infrastructure, is not given as much consideration as the switches and servers, but in fact it is the base upon which the rest is resides. It is important to plan the cabling according to the needs and structure of the data centre. This article looks at the standards that have been put in place by cabling bodies to aid in this process and discusses important considerations in choosing the media and platforms for the various areas in the data centre.
