💡 A tax deduction many people in Guyana don't claim:

If you (or your employees) pay medical or life insurance premiums, those premiums are deductible from taxable income — up to the LEAST of: the premium paid, 10% of gross salary, or $50,000/month.

For someone paying a $30,000/month premium in the 25% bracket, that's $7,500/month less tax — $90,000 a year — just for claiming a deduction they're already entitled to.

Employers: ask your staff if they hold policies and apply it through payroll. It costs the business nothing and puts real money in your team's pockets.

(As always — keep the premium receipts on file in case GRA asks.)

📌 Quick reminder for anyone running payroll in Guyana:

Your July payroll comes with two deadlines in August — PAYE (Form 5) must reach the GRA within 14 days of month end, and NIS contributions are due by the 15th. Two agencies, two penalties if you're late.

While you're at it, a 2026 mid-year check worth doing:

✅ Personal allowance updated to $140,000/month (or 1/3 of income if greater)
✅ NIS capped at $280,000 insurable earnings ($15,680 max employee share)
✅ NIS deducted from gross BEFORE calculating PAYE (it's tax-deductible)
✅ 25% up to $280,000/month chargeable income, 35% above

If you set your payroll up in a previous year and never revisited it, it's worth 10 minutes to check these — the figures have moved in consecutive budgets.

Are We Really Using Our Greatest Advantage?

Scientists have discovered that one of the key features that sets humans apart from other species is our prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for:

• Planning for the future
• Logical reasoning
• Making thoughtful decisions
• Self-control
• Setting long-term goals
• Abstract and creative thinking

Humans have a remarkably well-developed prefrontal cortex compared to our overall brain size. It's one of the reasons we've built civilizations, explored space, invented technology, and created art, science, and medicine.

But here's a question worth asking:

Are we truly using it to its full potential?

Not in the mythical sense that we "only use 10% of our brain"—science has shown that's not true. We use our entire brain, with different regions becoming active for different tasks.

The real question is different.

How often do we pause to think critically instead of reacting emotionally? How often do we plan years ahead instead of focusing only on today? How often do we challenge our assumptions, learn something new, or solve problems creatively?

Every day gives us opportunities to strengthen the very abilities that make us uniquely human.

Perhaps our greatest untapped potential isn't hidden in unused parts of the brain—it's in how intentionally we choose to use the incredible brain we already have.

So I'll leave you with one question:

Are you using your mind to its highest potential today?

Thinking about hiring your first employee in Jamaica? Budget for more than the salary. 👇

On a J$250,000/month salary, the employer also pays roughly:

NIS 3% → J$7,500
NHT 3% → J$7,500
Education Tax 3.5% (after NIS) → J$8,487.50
HEART 3% → J$7,500 (only if your total payroll is over J$292,300/month)

So that J$250,000 hire really costs about J$281,000/month. Roughly 12% on top of salary is a good rule of thumb when you're budgeting for staff.

Small silver lining: if you're a small operation with total payroll under J$292,300/month, HEART doesn't apply to you at all.

Reminder for anyone running a business in Jamaica: your June S01 is due at TAJ by Tuesday, July 14.

Quick self-check before you file:

✅ Using the NEW tax threshold? It went up to J$1,902,360/year (J$158,530/month) on April 1. If your spreadsheet still has last year's number, your PAYE is off.
✅ Deducting NIS BEFORE calculating PAYE and Education Tax? Both are calculated on gross minus NIS, not full gross.
✅ NIS capped at J$416,666.67/month earnings — but NHT and Education Tax have NO cap.
✅ Total monthly payroll J$292,300 or less? You're exempt from HEART.

Filing late means penalties plus interest, so worth 10 minutes to double-check. Hope this saves someone a headache! 🇯🇲
