Garoon Tech develops a digital platform for professional agricultural consultancy - a mobile application connecting farmers with agronomists. The concept is to provide or receive a remote visual analysis for the detection of plants’ diseases and deficiency symptoms. The goal is to equip gardeners with affordable access to expert advice on what types and amounts of fertilizers (both natural and chemical) are needed to overcome the reported problem. The agronomists, on the other hand, are able to earn money remotely via this platform. The product is aimed to solve the lack of communication between gardeners and industry specialists, overcoming the existing logistical problems.

Garoon Tech разрабатывает цифровую платформу для профессионального сельскохозяйственного консультирования - мобильное приложение, связывающее фермеров с агрономами. Концепция заключается в предоставлении и, следовательно, получении удаленного визуального анализа с целью обнаружения болезней и симптомов дефицита среди растений.
Идея заключается в том, чтобы предоставить садоводам доступ к советам экспертов о том, какие типы и количество удобрений (как природных, так и химических) необходимы для решения выявленной проблемы. В то же время, платформа поможет агрономам зарабатывать деньги удаленно и в свободном графике. Продукт призван решить проблему отсутствия коммуникации между садоводами и специалистами отрасли, путем преодоления существующих логистических проблем.

📍 Based on most information available online, the official languages in Senegal are French and Arabic, but it is a lot easier to find an English-speaking person there than in other African countries (e.g. Republic of Cameroon) where the official language is stated to be English. 🌍

But this was just the introduction to the context for you. We were doing research about our potential users in Senegal, and most of the locals there, in reality, speak their national language called Wolof. Even though Wolof has an alphabet/orthography, the main usage of Wolof is for speaking, due to which a decent percentage of the population cannot read/write, since they do not need the script in their daily life at all. In particular, this relates to our main user persona - the elderly farmers. 🧑🏾‍🌾

📝 Realization of this fact and then a collection of some insights while trying to test the application in Senegal was the very moment when our team faced a true deadlock by realizing that everything our tech team has done before, stopped working immediately because the users simply cannot understand what is happening in our application's flow, what is written on the buttons, and so on.

📱 A mobile app is a collection of connected experiences. It’s our job to make those experiences cohesive and frictionless. This is no small task. This is a fascinating challenge for us and we are currently analyzing the existing case studies as well as experimenting with extraordinary visual/intuitive approaches for revitalizing our product's interface in the above-described market we target. While the situation might seem to be similar to designing for visually impaired people, it is not. Interactions must be text-free but intuitive and aligned with users’ desired outcomes.

While we are well aware that this is quite a unique challenge and something unprecedented for many, even strong UX designers/researchers, we would appreciate any suggestions on methodologies or best practices you might have in mind while we go through the customer development process. Մենք արդեն իսկ համոզվել ենք, որ աֆրիկյան երկրների գյուղատնտեսական և տեխնոլոգիական ոլորտները զարգանում են աննախադեպ տեմպերով։ Եվ ի տարբերություն բազմաթիվ այլ տարածաշրջանների, Աֆրիկան գիտակցում և հստակ քայլեր է ձեռնարկում այդ երկու ոլորտներն համատեղելու ուղղությամբ։

🇬🇧🌴 As you remember, months ago Garoon Tech was amongst the companies participating in the Economic and Trade Mission of the Francophonie region in Central Africa that took place in several Central African countries (Mission économique de la Francophonie en Afrique centrale). 🌍

We have already ascertained that the agricultural and technological sectors of African countries are developing at unprecedented rates. And unlike many other regions, Africa is well aware of and is taking clear steps toward combining these two areas.

👩‍🌾 Thanks to the recent invitation from the Rwandan government, we plan to visit the African continent again in the nearest future. We are now conducting relevant research and preparing a transformed technological solution, taking into account the priorities of the existing problems in that region, as well as the specifics of gardeners.

The markets and users of the European Union and Africa are really different, which makes the ongoing development of our app even more fascinating.
