With 5G rapidly climbing the hype cycle toward the peak of inflated expectations, many organizations are asking the same question: “Where does 5G stand today, and how long before it can help my business?”

Carriers in the U.S. are not only talking about it, but claiming their trials are ongoing and deployments are coming soon — in many cases, years earlier than had been thought possible. In reality, 5G has a limited, powerful use case today but can reach its exceptional potential within the next couple years.

Definition: VoIP is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over computer networks like the Internet. VoIP converts analog voice signals into digital data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations using Internet Protocol (IP).

VoIP calls can be made on the Internet using a VoIP service provider and standard computer audio systems. Alternatively, some service providers support VoIP through ordinary telephones that use special adapters to connect to a home computer network. Many VoIP implementations are based on the H.323 technology standard.

VoIP offers a substantial cost savings over traditional long distance telephone calls. The main disadvantage of VoIP is a greater potential for dropped calls and degraded voice quality when the underlying network links are under heavy load.

VoiP is the way to Go now!

If you've never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a method for taking analog audio signals, like the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet.

How is this useful? VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls. The practical upshot of this is that by using some of the free VoIP software that is available to make Internet phone calls, you're bypassing the phone company (and its charges) entirely.

VoIP is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to completely rework the world's phone systems. VoIP providers like Vonage have already been around for a while and are growing steadily. Major carriers like AT&T are already setting up VoIP calling plans in several markets around the United States, and the FCC is looking seriously at the potential ramifications of VoIP service.

What You Need to Know About Different Types of Internet Service

First, it's worthwhile to know the differences between the types of internet service available. "Broadband" is an umbrella term that covers all of the always-on types of internet connections: cable, satellite, DSL, and fiber optic service (FiOS). These are the high-speed internet services that keep you constantly connected. The other option is dial-up (yes, as in AOL dial-up, which still exists and people still pay for). Unless dial-up is you're only choice, you'll want to go with broadband. Here's a summary of the different types of broadband connections available to consumers:

A New Era of Mobile Telecommunications

Telecom technology is changing our lives in ways we did not envision. Today, efficient packet switched networks carry media packets (voice, data, and video) to intelligent mobile devices that users carry everywhere.

The past 50 years have witnessed a migration from traditional telephony networks to telephony networks based on an IP backbone and the cloud. Today’s telecom technology can be effectively divided into three streams—networks, devices, and applications. Following the evolution of each stream provides background and context for understanding what the future holds.

Satellite telecommunication is the most mature of space applications. Starting 50 years ago with the launch of Telstar in 1962 and Syncom in 1963, satcom has continued to grow ever since.

At first, satellite performance was very limited. To compensate for this, very large ground stations with dish antennas more than 20 metres in diameter were required to establish links with them. The use of satellites was limited to long distance telephony and to the transport of television signals between studios.

By 1990, two out of every three intercontinental telephone calls were transmitted by telecommunication satellites. Satellites proved particularly useful for communicating with many of the countries in the less developed parts of the world.

New technology and different kinds of demand have changed the way communications satellites are used. More powerful satellites and the use of higher frequencies have made it possible for many people to receive direct signals from the sky. At the beginning of the 21st century, more than 100 million European homes were able to watch television programmes transmitted by satellites, either by direct reception or through cable distribution systems.

Today telecommunications satellites are part of our daily lives. Many everyday activities rely on telecommunication satellites that are in orbit, almost 36 000 kilometres above our heads.

Did you know that:

When you listen to the radio, it is very likely that the signal you are receiving has been distributed from the central studios by satellite?

Many newspapers and magazines are produced locally but printed centrally? The content of the paper is sent to the printing plants using satellite links.

Even when a news or sports event shown on television is taking place just a few kilometres away from the studios, it has probably been transmitted via satellite?

Most news agencies use satellites to distribute text, audio and video to their affiliates?

In many countries, access to the Internet is by satellite communication? Internet service providers often link their servers to the core of the Internet network by satellite. With the emergence of very powerful broadband satellites, users – equipped with their own broadband interactive satellite terminals – will get access to the Internet regardless of their distance from the nearest terrestrial node.

Telecommunications is a general term for a vast array of technologies that send information over distances. Mobile phones, land lines, satellite phones and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) are all telephony technologies -- just one field of telecommunications. Radio, television and networks are a few more examples of telecommunication.

While most people associate telecommunications with modern technologies, the strict definition of the term encompasses primitive and even ancient forms of telecommunication. Among these is the use of smoke signals as a kind of visual telegraph. Puffs of smoke were time-released by smothering a fire with a blanket, then quickly removing and replacing the blanket. Widely used by the American Indians, smoke signals could communicate short messages over long distances, assuming a clear line of sight.

There are a great many advantages of telecommunication that caused it to spread across almost every field of daily life. Telecommunications have improved people's ability to stay in touch with friends and family. Grandparents can receive pictures, emails, and videos of their grandchildren over the Internet. Families spread across continents can communicate inexpensively via email or with phone cards.

Telecommunications has changed the landscape of entertainment. People can access hundreds of television stations with the push of a button, getting instant access to enjoyable information. The information contained in MP3 files can be transmitted in seconds over the Internet, enabling listeners to enjoy music anytime and anywhere.

Telecommunications has also changed the way in which people work. It is now possible to commute from a beach in Florida, from home, or from anyplace where a computer, a phone or Internet service is available. These advances in telecommunications have not only untethered people from desks, but they have also made it possible for people who might traditionally be unable to be in the workforce- such as those who are caring for children, or those who are disabled- to have exciting jobs and contribute to the business community.
