A great reflective post on design by one of my team members Bryan Susanto. He's a recent graduate from the University of Melbourne in CompSci, Mathematics, and UI/UX (the perfect combo for us).

In the last 6 months he has already worked on countless client projects that we have all around Australia and the world. He's dedicated, clever, resourceful, and an amazing human being. Check out his post below, it's worth a read:

Back in year 10, I wanted to create a website for someone as I found web development to be enjoyable with its low barrier to entry, instant results in the browser, and the fact that it’s sharable through just a link in the browser. So I gathered a list of things I would need to learn to do so, which can be divided into two categories:

1. Technical skills: Frontend (HTML, CSS, and JS) and backend (at the time, PHP and MySQL)

2. Design skills: Graphic design and User Interface (UI) design.

So with that, I started looking for resources online to study it, which mainly came in the form of multiple-hour long YouTube tutorials, a long YouTube tutorial playlist, or a Udemy course I got. Thank you, by the way, to all those who released YouTube courses for free and continue doing so, especially freeCodeCamp and the Net Ninja; you all have been a crucial part of starting my journey into web development and programming in general.

Although I got stuck in “tutorial hell” for some time, I was eventually able to prevail to create that website for someone, despite having unmaintainable spaghetti code as it was the first time I created a website of that scale. I was able to get out of it by just forcing myself to start working on the project after going through (and sometimes following along) the tutorials, and to refer back to my notes or search online when I got stuck. Truly I learnt the most through struggling to make a full-blown website.

Do not let this happen to your business 🤯

A software client came to us in a panic asking us to audit code for an app that had been built by an overseas software developer. They had already spent upwards of $100k when the software developer decided to hold their code ransom and ask for more money.

The results are in, we received a total of 2,345 job applicants for our Junior Web Dev role from Seek, LinkedIn, and University job boards.

A big shout out to Mak in our business ops team that went through a majority of the applicants. There were so many applicants I had to assist her in the process, it was too many for one person.

We do not use AI or other automated tools in the process to shortlist, which makes the process time consuming as we read every single cover letter. It is always worth it though, we have some UNBELIEVABLE candidates, I am very impressed.

We are now short listing for the first round of interviews.

Thank you again to all the applicants, your time in applying is much appreciated. As stated in the job ad we don't have the capacity to give feedback to over 2000 applicants, for a team of 5 that is not feasible. I wish the applicants who miss out on this job all the best in their search for a junior role, you are more than welcome to apply again in the future.

Bring on the interviews.

We are hiring a casual Junior Software Developer (Web Dev) to join our fully remote Australian team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within our software dev team, learn the ropes with a dedicated mentor, and enhance your skill set. 💻

We are looking for a motivated and willing learner. Someone who approaches unknown challenges head on, not hides from them. Someone that plays with the band, not a solo artist. A team player, not a lone ranger. A coder, not a prompter. We want someone that is enthusiastic to join the industry and bring their problem solving skills to Sanico.

From Germany to America, from Perth to Melbourne, people keep asking me how we land software contracts with companies all around the world. My answer: Because we are that F****** good.

Let me explain.

A long time ago I read a fantastic book called “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” by Cal Newport. As obvious within the title of the book, it discusses the premise that when one focuses on skills and ability then other people, whether businesses or clients, will find it hard to ignore them.

Let me give an example, I ask 1000 local league soccer players to line up shoulder to shoulder. I turn to my friend Matt and ask him to pick one player to captain his team. Before he picks I ask one more player to join the line, Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best players in modern era soccer.

Who will my friend pick out of the 1001 players? One of the best players known to mankind, or 1 of the 1000 average local league players?

Cristiano Ronaldo. Full stop.

Who the heck is Sanico?

They say you can’t sell a secret, and I agree. But how do you build a reputation for yourself with a remote company founded in Adelaide? How do you build a reputation for yourself not only in your local neighbourhood but the whole online world?

Number 1: We show our face EVERYWHERE online to build authenticity.

We post our face on,
- our profile picture on Instagram,
- our LinkedIn,
- the top of our website,
- on our Google Search Profile,
- our YouTube intro video,
- on a bus ad in Adelaide.

Number 2: We share the work we perform for our clients which demonstrates our expertise.

We wrote about...

No one likes a Flaker. You know the type, a person that commits to something 100% and then cancels a touch before the commitment. Or worse, they fail to show up at all and let nobody know.

Yes yes yes, we all know the type. Let me dig in here.

When we built Sanico Software we started with a few inner core principles. Principles we never stated out aloud but instead knew subconsciously. One major one, NEVER EVER FLAKE ON CLIENTS.

Why? Because, as I stated at the start, no one likes a flaker. It works the same in business. When you flake on a client, in particular when you COMMIT to a specific date 100% and fail to follow through you will tarnish your reputation. Like sinking sand, the more you flake, the worse your reputation sinks.

From personal flaking to flaking in business, it all ends the same, in disappointment.

Frequency Matters
“Right right right, Sav I get it, but what if they have a super valid reason?”

Valid reasons exist, for example, the other day an engineer on our team said to me that a family member of theirs passed away. They asked for a day off work and without a second thought I granted it. They asked if I required a certificate to show proof. I scoffed to myself, I required no certificate.

“But Sav, what if they are a flaker and they are lying?”

Ahhhhh let me explain further. This engineer never ever flakes. The total opposite, they show up on time to everything with zero cancellations or excuses. They created a flawless reputation for themselves. Therefore, if they call me and ask for the day off for ANY reason I will grant it happily. Frequency matters.

Let me paint another picture, if my engineer arrived at my desk with a continual flow of cancellations and excuses every month then I will start to lose trust in their authenticity.

I shall illustrate this with a fun little dialog.

We are hiring a Business Operations (Administration) Team Member. This is a rare opportunity to work within the business operations and administrative side of our remote Software Engineering team.

We are looking for a go-getter, not a slacker. A solutions person, not a giver-upper. A team player, not a lone wolf. Someone with enthusiasm to grow long-term with our team, not a person that is easily discouraged.

Advertise when you are busy - don’t stink of desperation 📢

I have dealt with many clients in the past that have said they don’t need to advertise since they are too busy.

I have also witnessed several of those clients hit unexpected dry spells that resulted in a frantic search for more business.

In my opinion, there is rarely a bad reason to prepare for the near-future, especially in a world that changes from day to day.

How can you prepare for the near-future?

My statement above may seem difficult to digest given the future is not predictable. However, in this case, I see preparations as preventative measures that help minimise exposure to a downturn in business.

There is no guarantee that advertising means your business will avoid a downturn. However, inaction to promote your business guarantees no new channels besides word-of-mouth.

Don’t forget, competitors to your business actively search for ways to be seen. If they are consistent in their efforts while you take zero action, their business may start securing your prospective clients.

What type of advertising do I mean?

Advertising is far deeper than the modern thinking of Google Ads and Social Media Marketing. Yes, the aforementioned channels are positive for advertisement but there are many different ways to seek business.

You could walk directly into a business to meet the owner, invest in a website, invest in billboards, attend local events, wrap your car, collaborate with...

Always Show Your Real Face Online...

When a new employee starts I ask them to upload a portrait shot of their faces for every account they use internally at my company. Not a picture of their dog, not a picture of the beach, and not a picture of their favourite anime character. A picture of them.

I request them to add a portrait shot of their face because of the wise words that my professor in America said to me long ago:

"If you do not author any document with your full name then I will refuse to read it."

Why would he refuse to read a document without an author? He reasoned that if someone fails to author a document with their name they must lack a sense of pride for what they wrote and want to hide from accountability. Therefore, he refuses to waste his precious time to read it.

When a person writes their full name it holds them accountable to the material they wrote. A dog tag of sorts. I wholeheartedly agree with my professor and utilise the same logic with profile pictures.

In the online world I see many people write horrible things authored by fake aliases and accompanied with profile pictures of dogs, cats, famous people, and other nonsensical images.

Anyone that uses a social media platform will understand what I intend. Sure, people write terrible things with their full name and a profile picture of their face, but at least they assume full responsibility and accountable for what they wrote.

I call people with fake names and fake profile pictures online the wind. You feel it but do not see it. They say hurtful things that cause destruction but no one sees the culprit, instead they hide behind the veil of anonymity.

At my company I ensure every employee, intern, or contractor utilises their full name and portrait headshot of their face for internal and external accounts they use.

As a remote software company I am more serious about this because the majority of communication happens online. We meet face to face rarely, we hold almost no meetings, and conduct close to zero video calls. Not by accident, we designed the company in this manner for reasons I shall explain in another post.

In our online communications I want to emulate the real world where people take responsibility for what exits from their mouth. Everyone pays closer attention to what they say or write when the veil of anonymity is pulled away.

I am Sav Tripodi, here is my face, I wrote this blog post on the 21st of October 2024, I am held accountable and take full responsibility for the contents of this blog post, no veil of anonymity here.

From Perth to Sydney, Melbourne to Germany, we worked with companies all around the world this month 🌎✈️. People keep asking us, why do interstate and international companies pick Sanico Software when it’s based in Adelaide, Australia? Well, the short answer is, because we are good at what we do.

Borders and countries don’t matter to a company when they are looking for the best people for the job. We produce high quality work and are proud of it.

One week we are working with an AI startup in Germany, the next we are flying from Sydney to Melbourne, after that continuing projects for multiple Perth companies, all while servicing large projects in Adelaide.

For these reasons, we ask the inverse question: Why wouldn’t an international company pick us?
