Conversations on the Verandah with NED: 'Small ideas, strong neighbourhoods.' 🎙️

Some of the strongest neighbourhoods are built from the smallest ideas.🏡

Join us for the next episode, where we'll explore two very different scales of neighbourly action to share how you can create communities where people genuinely feel they belong. 🧡

We'll be joined by:
🔹 Jody Moate, a community volunteer representing three Very Neighbourly Organisations: Pasadena Community Centre, Pasadena And St Marys Action Group , and the The Little Library on Lloyd Street. Jody will share what can happen when neighbours simply decide to start something themselves— from a little library made from up-cycled fridges to a much-loved annual Neighbours Got Talent night.

🔹 Ngaire Trigg, from Townsville City Council, who'll share how a long-running partnership with Neighbours Every Day has grown into practical tools, including co-branded connection cards available in a number of languages and neighbour-contact fridge magnets, now helping residents right across Townsville reconnect.

From council chambers to planting in pocket parks and front verges, belonging can grow at any scale.

If anyone in Lloyd Street is keen to host a Verge Garden Working Bee and continue the Verge Gardening Project in our street, just like the neighbours in Mingbool Avenue have done, let me know! It's my experience that residents are quite happy to maintain a verge garden by w**ding and watering when required but need support to get planting. Some residents in Lloyd Street have given it a go but we gotta start connecting these gardens.

Ditch the plastic w**d control and fake turf and constant spraying by Council. Let's have some fun in our street and plant species for bees, butterflies, other insects and birds.

My verge garden might look a bit wild to some but if you want something a bit more orderly , that's totally possible too.

Pasadena And St Marys Action Group have Verge Garden Plant Starter Packs available and there is awesome rebates available from the City of Mitcham too.

In the Children's Library today. Kids are not on social media so it feels weird trying to reach them by this platform but if you're a grown up with children in your life, drop by.

Also if you're spending some time in the school holidays tidying up book collections, I'm a little bit low on picture books. They need to be in good second hand condition if you'd like to pop any into the Children's Library.

Thanks to the wonderful team from Eternal Blooms by Sarah for this wonderful papercraft class today. All materials supplied including the delicious books which are lovingly donated or sourced by Sarah, thus saved from landfill. Thick pages that are perfect to recreate a vase for a colourful bouquet.

Next lesson on my wish list is learning how to make the blooms but the folding techniques learnt today are a gateway to many other bookish craft adventures. Especially handy for a Street Librarian wondering how to manage the books that languish, looking at you Readers Digest anthologies.

Not to mention the class was held in one of the cosy rooms in the Mortlock Library. Excuse me dreary wintry day while I indulge in a little bookish craft session in a beautiful library.

Next stop was the Push Pull Play exhibit which you must go and see. So much nostalgia for grown ups and fun for kids too. I'll pop the link in the comments.

Hey neighbours, we are so excited to say we have a limited supply of Verge Garden Plant Starter Packs to give to residents:

🏡 living in Pasadena and St Marys.
🧤🪏💦 Will maintain their verge garden by planting, w**ding, watering and pruning.

We put together 6 verge friendly pot luck plants, that may include native grasses, groundcovers and small bushes that fit within the City of Mitcham verge plant guidelines. These are a good Starter Pack as you begin your verge garden adventure!

Volunteers have been growing these plants in backyards and we would love to see our little plants in your new verge garden! We know some of you will forge ahead all on your own with these plants, while others might like a hand and we might be able to work with you to get your garden established.

Our Verge Project is made possible with a Green Adelaide Grassroots Grant, native seed and cutting donations, volunteers who grow, admin and plan together. Join in!
