Seen a rising trend of "respoolers" in customer conversation. PSA don't do it friends! If you crack a plastic spool or dent a cardboard spool there are better solutions. Spools are not equal, Polymaker for example are very intentional about spool design, spools that externally look the same are actually quite different to suit certain material types.

Unsure why anyone would buy filament without a spool?

Refills were proposed by Richard Horne back in 2018. the benefits were lower manufacturing cost, shipping cost and less waste. It would cost money to 3D print a reusable spool, but over-time the saving will out weigh the cost of printing.

The concept became more mainstream when Bambu Lab grew to become a dominant player in the industry. Their popularity and re-usable spool design helped to define an "industry-standard" for refill dimensions and requirements.

Majority of filaments we sell are still on spools, but demand for refills is high for colours that you use up quickly. Just remember that once you install a colour on a refill spool, that spool is dedicated to that colour until you use it up.

Signwriters rejoice, Translucent CMY PLA filament can be layered to create new custom light transmitting colours, not only perfect for backlit logos but also front lit signs. Just keep in mind that PLA is best suited for indoor applications.
