Our 10 year Tech throwbacks have reached the 1980s and one of the most important technology developments were when mobile phones officially started making their mark in Australia. It’s the first step to the smart phones we carry around with us every day!

Early cell networks rolled out across the decade, bringing with them the iconic brick phone. Heavy, expensive and definitely not something to put in your pocket but for the first time Aussies could make calls on the go.

The brick walked so today's smartphone could run.

Growth for a business is always exciting. More customers, more staff, more devices and most importantly more opportunities. But there's something we find that often gets left behind and that’s the internet connection that was perfectly fine a few years ago.

If your team is waiting for files to upload, video calls keep freezing, or your point of sale slows down during busy periods, your internet could be quietly costing your business more than you realise.

The good news? You don't have to figure it out on your own.
We'll take a look at how your business uses its connection and help you find a solution that grows with you, not one you'll outgrow in another 12 months.

As we continue celebrating 10 years in business we're looking back at a milestone that helped connect some of Australia's most remote communities. In the late 1970s, plans began for Australia's first telecommunications satellite network, with one clear goal in mind to bring reliable communication to people living far beyond the major cities.

Those early satellite projects laid the foundation for the services many regional Australians still rely on today, proving that distance shouldn't determine your ability to stay connected. Important when you live in a country as big as ours right?

It's a mission that still resonates with us. Technology has changed dramatically over the decades, but helping regional communities stay connected remains just as important today as it was back then.

Every business works a little differently.

When we worked with Enhance Physiotherapy, it wasn't just about installing Hosted Voice and getting their internet connected. It was about understanding how their team works, how their patients get in touch, and finding a solution that suited them.

As their business has grown, we've been there to help streamline their communications across their Melbourne and Gold Coast locations, making it simple for their team to stay connected no matter where they're working. That's what we enjoy most, listening first, then recommending technology that makes life easier.

And for businesses where staying connected is absolutely critical, our Business Priority plans provide an extra level of support, helping you get back up and running as quickly as possible if something ever goes wrong.

Technology is important but understanding the people using it is even more important.

Imagine needing your car to make a phone call. We're looking back to 1979 when Australia's first public mobile phone network hit the road.

These weren't the smartphones we know today, more like a landline installed in cars. The equipment filled the boot, and only a small number of people could even use the network but for the first time Australians could make a call without waiting for an operator to connect them. It was a glimpse into the future.

Fast forward to today and most of us carry more computer power in our pocket than those first mobile systems ever dreamed of. It’s safe to say we have come a long way.

Our camera rolls tell some pretty great stories. From the family holiday that didn't quite go to plan to the pet that somehow always knows when you're taking a photo or maybe the sunset you just had to capture. And yes, we can’t forget the accidental selfies and blurry photos that never stood a chance.

These days, taking the photo is only the beginning. We back them up to the cloud, send them to family, post them on social media and keep years of memories tucked away in our pockets. It’s not just a single snap of a pic.

Technology has changed the way we capture life's moments, but one thing hasn't changed, photos help us hold onto the memories that matter.
(And we're all grateful for the delete button when someone blinks)

QR codes have become part of everyday life. We scan them to order lunch, pay for parking, view menus and enter competitions. But not every QR code is as trustworthy as it looks.

Take a screenshot of the QR code in this post, open it in your photos and press and hold on the code. You'll be able to see where it takes you before opening the link (don't worry, this one's safe!).

Unfortunately, scammers have caught on too. QR code scams, sometimes called quishing, are becoming more common. Fake QR codes can be placed over real ones or included in emails and messages that lead you to websites designed to steal your information.

Just like you wouldn't click every link in an email, it's worth taking a moment to think before you scan. A few extra seconds could save you a whole lot of trouble.

As Lightning IP celebrates 10 years, we're winding the clock back to 1975, a big year for telecommunications in Australia.

This was the year the Postmaster General's Department split, giving us Telecom Australia. For the first time, telecommunications had its own dedicated focus, paving the way for faster innovation, better customer service and a network built for the future.

Looking back, it's hard to imagine a time when getting a new phone line could take months. Thankfully, things have changed a little since then!

Telecom Australia would eventually become the Telstra we know today, but this was the moment Australia's telecommunications industry really started to evolve into the connected world we know now. It's another reminder that every leap forward in technology starts with someone deciding there's a better way.

Here's a fun little hunt for you, those old pit lids stamped with "PMG" or the logo in the picture are still scattered around towns across Australia. Once you notice them, you'll start seeing them everywhere.

Businesses grow, teams change, and the way you communicate evolves too. But phone systems don't always keep up.

If calls are being missed, your team can't work flexibly, call routing no longer makes sense, or no one really knows how the system was originally meant to be set up in the first place, it might be time for a fresh look.

With our Hosted Voice Plus/Bundled plans, ongoing support is part of the package. Need to add a team member, move an extension or update your call flow? We can make those changes without the hassle of organising technician visits or paying extra for everyday updates.

Your phone system should grow with your business, not hold it back.

Winter has a way of bringing everyone indoors and onto the internet. Someone's streaming a movie while someone else is downloading a game, there's a video call happening in the study, and somehow every device in the house decides it's the perfect time to update.

If your internet is starting to show the loading screen more often than the movie itself, it might be time for a Winter Internet Check. We'll help you work out what's right for your home, without paying for more than you need.
