The tech talent shortage has a solution, and she's sitting in a high school classroom. 🙋‍♀️

For six consecutive years, Saint Stephen's College and event coordinator Casey McManus have been celebrating International Girls in ICT Day with a panel and series of tech workshops. Consistency matters in this space and six years of sustained effort signals a school culture that genuinely champions the future of its female students.

At the heart of this year's event was a panel of Young Tech Ambassadors and industry professionals representing some of Australia's most exciting technology organisations.
- Michelle and Daniel from PlaySide Studios
- Former student Aiden from the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Robotics program
- Jo from Canva Education

These professionals brought their real-world experience into the room, answering questions and sharing practical tips with over 120 Year 7 and 8 students. As research consistently shows that interest in STEM pathways begins to decline for girls in early high school, making targeted engagement at this stage genuinely impactful.

In Casey’s words, “Every year I look forward to seeing students encounter and embrace all the different options that are open to them with Digital Careers. We had some amazing panellists this year who gave engaging insights and I am so grateful for them, and everyone else who helped make this day possible for the students”.

To everyone involved at Saint Stephen's College and beyond - well done. This is how lasting change is made: one classroom, one conversation, one curious student at a time.

The Information and Communication Technology Gateway to Industry Schools project (ICT GISP) encourages partnerships between industry, government, schools and their communities to build Queensland's future information technology workforce. The tech industry isn’t standing still. Neither should your skills.

As part of Skill Up Month, we're encouraging professionals to take a clearer, more strategic approach to career growth, starting with one important question:

What are your current skills?

Understanding where your capabilities sit today, and identifying the skills needed for your next role, is critical to meaningful professional development.

As an ACS member, you have access to mySFIA. A tool that helps you assess your current skills, identify gaps, and map a pathway toward your next career goal, all in one place.

Because career growth becomes far more powerful when it’s driven by clarity, not guesswork.

Our Young Tech Ambassadors (YTA) March road trip through South East Queensland sparked curiosity, creativity, and career inspiration as more than 450 students across the region connected with emerging opportunities in technology and digital innovation.

Led by ACS Member and YTA Jameson Harvey from Red Dirt Robotics, the sessions offered students a firsthand look into the exciting and ever-evolving world of digital careers. From programming and robotics to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, Jameson’s stories and experiences helped students bridge the gap between classroom learning and future professional pathways.

Jameson cherished the opportunity to get back out to regional schools. ‘It was great to get back out on the road and speak with so many young people, sharing all the opportunities that technology offers across regional Queensland. Seeing that there are hundreds of students already interested in technology and beginning to build their skills for a career in the industry makes me feel like the future is in safe hands!’

"Hearing directly from a young ambassador made the possibilities feel real," said Deb Connolly from James Nash State High School, who praised the event for its energy and relevance. "Our students were fully engaged throughout the presentation, asking thoughtful questions and jumping right into the conversation - a fantastic experience for all!"

At Kepnock State High School, Digital Technologies teacher Liz Irvine described Jameson as “an impressive young man and excellent advocator for technology careers. Our students loved the visit and especially loved the merch!” Students from Years 7–12 participated actively and even enjoyed a bit of extra fun with the careers merch, which added an extra spark to their day.

A huge thank you goes out to Jameson and the teachers involved in hosting these memorable sessions. The YTA Road Trip continues to remind students that with curiosity, creativity and a bit of courage, the digital world offers endless possibilities ahead. The Young Tech Ambassadors program is funded by ACS and the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
