An algorithm can already decide whether you get the loan, the job, the home, the treatment. The question worth arguing about is whether you are allowed to say no and ask a person instead.

California just made part of it law. Its finalized privacy rules give people the right to opt out of automated decisions in areas like finance, housing, employment and healthcare, to see the logic behind them and to appeal. The right to refuse the algorithm is arriving.

But a right to refuse only means something if the human on the other side can actually overturn the machine, and has to explain why. If they just read the score and sign it, you have not escaped the algorithm at all. That is the part worth talking about. Come in.

A board can now tick a box that says it oversees artificial intelligence. The harder question is whether anyone in the room is actually allowed to say no to the machine.

This proxy season made board oversight of AI a headline. Glass Lewis reported in August 2026 that around seven in ten large European boards now oversee AI, and about 21 percent of the largest US companies now have an AI policy, up from roughly 15 percent a year ago.

But a policy is a document. Oversight is a person with the standing to question a model before its recommendation becomes a decision, and a record of that reasoning others can read later. That is the part worth arguing about. Come in.

A listed price used to be a simple promise. Everyone saw the same number.

That is quietly changing. Retailers can now use your personal data, your location, your browsing, even your past purchases, to set a price built just for you and shown only to you.

This month the US Federal Trade Commission opened a proposal for public comment, warning that using your data to set your price without telling you may break the law. As the FTC put it, you expect a listed price to be the one everyone sees, not an estimate of what you personally will pay.

Being told is not the same as being able to see the data behind your price or challenge it. That is the part worth arguing about. Come in.

Your board approved the AI policy. It never approved the settings that now enforce a different one.

In a survey of senior enterprise leaders reported this month, 91 percent said their organization has an AI governance policy. Yet 79 percent said employees are already working around it, and 28 percent admitted it is not consistently enforced.

A board can approve a policy. It cannot approve the thresholds, defaults, and vendor settings that decide what the system actually does day to day. Those defaults become the real policy, and no board ever reviewed them. Keeping a legible, contestable record of who set them is what a Collective Intelligence platform is for. We opened the room today. Come in.

For two years the public's view of AI and the media's story about it moved together. This month they split.

A new CARMA report, covered on 24 August, found public trust in AI actually rising, to 30 percent, with trust now outranking excitement as people's main response. Yet the coverage went the other way, positive stories falling from 57 percent to 47 and negative more than doubling. The public and the press do not even agree on who to blame for AI's harms. People point at the companies. The coverage points at the regulators.

When a board asks what the public thinks, it usually gets the headlines, not the verdict. Keeping both in one room is what a Collective Intelligence platform is for. We opened the room today. Come in.
