A couple of weeks ago, Rava had the opportunity to pitch at the UQ Ventures iLab Pitch Night.

It was a wonderful experience to stand on stage and speak to hundreds of people about a problem that means a lot to us: helping older adults stay more connected, supported, and included.

One of the best parts of the night was meeting so many people who were interested in the device, asked thoughtful questions, and shared personal stories about older loved ones.

Throughout the iLab program, we learned so much about refining Rava, testing our assumptions, listening to the people we are designing for, and explaining what we are building more clearly.

A huge thank you to UQ Ventures for the support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the program.

We are still early in the journey, but nights like this remind us why Rava matters.

If you are interested in Rava, know someone who might benefit from what we are building, or would like to speak with us about future trials, please reach out. We would love to hear from you.

For many families, ageing, care, or cognitive decline can bring a difficult emotional shift.

Even if a loved one is safe, supported, and receiving care, the relationship can start to feel different. Visits may become less frequent than anyone would like. Phone calls can be hard to coordinate, or rely on technical capabilities your loved one may not have. Video calls often rely on staff availability, family schedules, and technology that was not designed with every older person in mind.

Over time, connection can become something that has to be planned, arranged, and facilitated, rather than something that feels natural.

We believe families should not have to lose the feeling of everyday connection simply because someone has moved into aged care.

We are working on a device designed to make communication simpler, more spontaneous, and more accessible for older people and their loved ones. Our goal is to reduce the friction around staying connected, especially for older people who may struggle with phones, tablets, apps, small buttons, touchscreens, or remembering how to answer a call.

We also recognise that care staff are already stretched. Our device is not about adding another task to their day. It is about helping families stay more connected in a way that is easier for everyone involved.

We are still early in our journey, and we are learning directly from families, older people, carers, and aged care providers about what connection looks like in real life. Please reach out if you are interested in sharing your experience, trialling our device, or anything else!

Because aged care should not mean losing the small, everyday moments that make someone feel close,

So much of life depends on being able to “be there”.

Being there for a quick conversation. Being there for a moment that was not scheduled. Being there when someone needs you, or when you simply want to say hello.

But right now, being present somewhere digitally is often harder than it should be.

Video calls need to be scheduled. Someone has to answer the phone. A laptop has to be opened. A link has to be found. Someone else’s device has to be charged, held, positioned, and understood. And often, the moment passes before the connection even begins.

At Rava, we are working on a different kind of presence.

Our goal is to build an affordable telepresence device that makes it easy to drop in where you need to be, without relying on someone else’s phone, tablet, or technical confidence.

That might mean saying good morning to your family while you are away from home. It might mean checking in with an older parent without them needing to touch a screen. It might mean joining a classroom, workplace, meeting room, hospital room, or care environment in a way that feels more natural than another scheduled video call.

Think of it as being able to have a live presence in the places that matter to you, with the people who matter to you.

Not just another app. Not another meeting link. Not another device someone has to learn how to use.

A simpler way to be present.

We see a future where distance does not have to mean disconnection, and where spontaneous, everyday moments are not lost just because people are apart.

That is the future we can help you achieve with our device.

We are still early in our journey, and we would love to hear from people who relate to this problem. Whether it is family, care, work, study, distance, or accessibility, we would be grateful to know where remote presence feels hardest for you.

Where do you wish it was easier to simply “be there”?
