Should you update your computer drivers?

Usually, only if something is broken.

Windows Update handles most driver updates by itself. If you do need a specific driver, get it from the computer or hardware manufacturer, not from random “driver updater” tools claiming your machine has 37 urgent problems. Those tools often cause more trouble than they fix.

If your Wi-Fi keeps dropping, sound stops working, graphics are glitchy, printers misbehave, or Windows has been reinstalled and something feels off, proper driver installation can help.

Having driver issues or strange hardware problems? Book your computer in with Fix My Laptop and we’ll sort it out properly.

Most people only hear about "drivers" when something stops working, or some sketchy pop-up announces that 37 critical drivers are outdated and must be urgently updated - oh, and it will cost you $99 for the "updater". As usual, most people are left wondering whether they are supposed to become a par...

One of the most common reactions we hear when discussing data recovery is simple:
“It’s just copying files, isn’t it? Why so expensive?”
If only it was that simple, you would have done it yourself.

With the Australian economy slowing down and the cost of living still putting pressure on everyone, people are starting to think more carefully before spending money. When groceries, rent, electricity and insurance keep creeping up, replacing a computer just because it’s slow is not always the best move.

You aren’t lazy. That’s the easy answer. It’s also probably wrong. Nothing terrible has happened yet, so why bother? Which is exactly how every preventable disaster starts, because apparently humans require emotional trauma before taking basic precautions.

Computer randomly shutting down?

It’s not always “just Windows.” We regularly see shutdowns caused by overheating, dust buildup, failing power supplies, unstable RAM, and even overheating SSDs.

If your laptop or desktop powers off during gaming, backups, or heavy workloads, it’s worth checking before more damage occurs.

Computer randomly shutting down? The most common causes include overheating and faulty hardware. Brisbane diagnostics and repairs available.

People often ask us what laptop they should get for the best possible battery life. The answer is annoyingly predictable. Most of the time, it’s a MacBook. Not because it’s trendy, but because of how it’s built.

People often ask why MacBooks last so long on battery. It comes down to design, performance and efficiency.

Most people think they have backups. What they actually have is a few folders in the cloud.

Cloud = your files
Image backup = your entire computer

And you need both.

Cloud storage won’t restore your computer after a crash. Learn why full image backups save your system, programs, and settings, and how to recover in under an hour instead of rebuilding for days.

Most people think their files are “backed up” because they see a blue cloud icon. They’re not. They’re synchronized.

And that’s exactly how people lose years of photos, documents, and business data without even realising it.

We see it all the time at Fix My Laptop. Someone runs out of OneDrive space, clicks “Free up space”… and accidentally deletes files everywhere. Not just online. Everywhere.

That’s because OneDrive is a mirror, not a safety net. If it disappears in the cloud, it disappears on your computer too.

If you’re using OneDrive, you need to understand this one thing - sync is not backup! We break it down properly here, including how to avoid losing your data.

There’s a dangerous myth floating around Windows PCs nowadays. It sounds modern. It sounds convenient. "My files are backed up to the cloud". They’re not. They’re synchronized. And that difference is where people lose years of photos, tax records, client files, and the only copy of their kid.....

If you’ve ever been quoted for a MacBook repair and thought, that can’t be right, you’re not alone. It sounds excessive - until you understand how these machines are built.

At Fix My Laptop, we look at the full picture: the model, age, current value, and the actual fault. Only then do we tell you whether it’s worth repairing - or whether you’re better off replacing it.

Need a quote? Call or visit us - we’ll assess your MacBook and tell you if it’s worth repairing.
