The price of shares in Meta — the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Meta Quest (fka Oculus) — has dropped more than 25 percent from the previous day’s close, the morning after it revealed its first-ever sequential decline in Facebook’s daily active users. After closing at $323 Wednesday, they dropped as low as $238.90 before recovering slightly.

In the near future, when the "metaverse" becomes real, all the costumes you bought for your avatar in "Fortnite" will seamlessly move to "Minecraft" and "Call of Duty" and whatever other games you want to play.

At least that's what proponents of so-called "Web3" concepts — like NFTs, blockchain technology, and cryptocurrency — would have you believe. But game developers say that's a fantasy that will never happen.

The shift to remote work ended the traditional 9–5 workday. More than ever, employees work in bursts, at night, between caregiving tasks, and whenever they can find time between the endless distractions of messages, calls, and emails.

For many teams, this means people are — quite literally, according to research — working at all hours of the day, which also means that they’re rarely working simultaneously.

Is this bad, though?

Researchers found that it depends on the task. For some tasks, being on at the same time schedule improved productivity; for others, the distractions created by coworkers made it harder to finish the tasks, and productivity went up in what used to be considered off hours. Importantly, employees proved to be good judges of how to manage their time to be most productive.

To identify the right balance between in-office and at-home work, focus less on where you’ll be sitting more on what you’re actually trying to achieve. This means examining the precise nature of the tasks in front of you, your specific objectives, and the weight you attach to things like efficiency, effectiveness, camaraderie, and mental health.

As you plot out your team’s work plan, here are six questions you should be asking about meetings specifically:

1️⃣ Should this be a meeting? Think very carefully about whether time spent meeting might be better spent thinking, writing, or engaging in other projects.

2️⃣ Are my meeting goals relationship-based or task-based? Task-based goals often don't need to happen in person. And while relationship-based goals are usually accomplished best in person, especially when it comes to tough conversations, they don't have to be.

3️⃣ How complex are my objectives? Are you dealing with a thorny, complicated issue or a routine briefing?

4️⃣ Could my meeting take an entirely different shape or form? There’s a room, there’s Zoom, and there’s hybrid. But there’s also a world of possibilities that don’t fall into any of those categories, such as recorded meetings and collaborative Google Doc work.

5️⃣ What type of meeting will be the most inclusive? This is one of the most significant advantages of the virtual format. There are no travel expenses involved for people living in different places and parents juggling childcare can call in.

6️⃣ Does my facilitator have the skills and tech setup to pull off a hybrid gathering? Done incorrectly, hybrid meetings can end up sidelining and even alienating remote participants. Make Zoom participants feel like full participants by establishing clear protocols for all participants to offer input. And make sure the program doesn't include something that requires in-person presence.

All-remote work environments present a mostly-level playing field when it comes to managing your personal brand.

But as many shift into a hybrid phase of work, new questions emerge. If you plan to work remotely full-time or most of the time, how can you stay visible when your in-office colleagues are likely to have far more exposure to the boss? How can you gain access to casually transmitted information that could prove useful to your career advancement?

A professional branding expert points to four ways:

⭐ Overdeliver to combat the negative assumptions that can come with remote work. Meet or exceed deadlines — and make it clear when you do.

⭐ Avoid purely transactional relationships. Your colleagues in the office will be building organic connections in the office kitchen and hallway, while you're bouncing from Zoom to Zoom. Put in extra work to connect on a personal level with your coworkers.

⭐ Make yourself physically visible. Leave your camera on when you can.

⭐ Ensure you’re easy to work with. Find out which ways of communication your boss prefers — and accommodate.
