As we begin National Reconciliation Week, we reflect on truth, respect, and the importance of walking together toward a more inclusive future.

We acknowledge the Ngunnawal people, the Traditional Custodians of the Canberra region, and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Reconciliation is a shared journey and one that calls for listening, learning, and lasting change.

Our CEO Samuel Spencer joined Sky News Australia to talk about Australia's incomplete government data catalogue, and what it really means for everyday Australians.

"This is data about children in schools, patients in hospitals, taxpayers. We need to be able to know who's using it."

After $200 million and four years of data reforms, the catalog that is supposed to show what government data exists and how it is being used remains critically incomplete.

Sam's point is that this is not a technical problem. It is a cultural one, and a visibility one. Departments cannot improve what they cannot see.

"Government data sharing is a very positive thing for the Australian economy. When researchers can get access to government data, policy can be more efficient."

But that only works when the foundation is there.

Right now, it is not.

Our COO and co-founder Lauren Eickhorst was recently featured in Human Resources Director Australia

She shares about what leadership actually looks like when you build a technology company outside Sydney and Melbourne, and why the venture capital model is not the only path to building something meaningful and sustainable.

"When leadership isn't driven by the next funding round, decisions tend to reflect other priorities. Long-term sustainability, customer outcomes, and team development become more important."

"Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not."

It is a honest and timely piece on funding, culture, gender, and what success in tech should really mean.

Our CEO Sam Spencer's research into federal government data management has been covered by InnovationAus.com , and the findings are hard to ignore.

None of the 22 government agencies analysed were compliant across all their data sets. Some of the largest departments in the country are still not identifying where data is held, who can access it, or whether it includes sensitive information.

As Sam told InnovationAus:

"The public service is sitting on a veritable gold mine, but without a coherent data strategy that value is locked away."

"If they don't know what data they're holding, they're not going to know what they're supposed to be protecting, and that's going to lead to data breaches."

With AI adoption accelerating across the public sector, the cost of getting this wrong is only growing. Government could be delivering services twice as fast and generating four times more value for taxpayers. But only if the data foundation is there.

We partnered with Public Spectrum and the University of Canberra to take a snapshot of data maturity across the Australian public sector. The results are striking.

84% of public servants say their departments are not getting the best value from their data. Nearly half say it is hard to find the data they need to do their job. And 65% find it difficult to understand data when they do find it.

These are not technology problems. They are governance problems, and they have real consequences for how government serves citizens.

We are proud to have supported this research.

Our CEO Samuel Spencer was interviewed in the Herald Sun Sun this week on the global Canvas data breach, which has now impacted Victorian schools and thousands of students across Australia.

The breach is a stark reminder that the risks facing students are not limited to a single attack. Names, email addresses, private messages and personal information may already be in circulation, and once data is out in the world, it cannot be taken back.

As Sam noted, the question institutions and governments need to be asking is not just how to respond to breaches when they happen, but how much sensitive data we actually need to be collecting in the first place.

Last week, our CEO Sam Spencer took the stage at the 12th Annual Australian Government Data Summit in Canberra, in front of government data leaders, CDOs, and public sector executives.

His session asked a question that has been getting harder to ignore: when bad data governance becomes national news, how does it happen, and what can leaders do to make sure it doesn't happen to them?

Sam walked through how the Australian National Data Catalogue fell so far short of expectations despite years of investment, why department secretaries were often unaware of their own organisation's data governance performance, and what practical steps CDOs can take right now to get ahead of the same pitfalls.

The conversations in the room made one thing clear. Awareness of the problem is growing. The appetite for practical solutions is real.

Thank you to the team at Aus Gov Data Summit for having us.
