“I Lost My Passwords Again!” – The Senior-Friendly Guide to Easy, Safe Logins

Hey everyone, Craig here! If I had a dollar for every time a local Canberra senior walked into my shop holding a worn-out, taped-together address book stuffed with crossed-out passwords, I could probably retire to the coast! And usually, right behind them is their adult daughter or son sighing, "Craig, Mum keeps resetting her internet banking password and getting locked out....

Tired of losing passwords? Canberra’s Craig the Computer Geek shares easy, stress-free password tips for seniors and adult children helping elderly parents.

If every website feels like it's loading in slow motion, the problem usually isn't your internet — it's your browser.

𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐞𝐬 (Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data) wipes out months of build-up that quietly slows things down. Closing unused tabs and removing extensions you don't actually use helps too — each one uses a little bit of memory, even sitting in the background.

Give it a try before assuming you need a new computer — this alone fixes it more often than you'd think.

One of my customers asked me something last week that I haven't stopped thinking about.

I'd just finished fixing her laptop, and instead of saying thanks and seeing me out, she asked: "Could you teach me how to do this myself next time?"

That got me thinking. I fix a lot of computers. But a lot of my senior customers don't actually want a magic fix that leaves them none the wiser — they want to understand what happened, and feel confident enough to handle the small stuff themselves.

So I'm putting it out there: 𝗜'𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗼𝗻-𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀. 𝗡𝗼 𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗻𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗱𝘂𝗺𝗯" 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴). 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵, 𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲.

If you like to read things through in your own time first, my Seniors Guide eBooks ($14.95 each, or all 7 in the Complete Bundle for $90 at seniorsguide.net.au/shop) cover the basics — backups, staying safe from scams, getting online, and more. Read the guide, then book a session and we'll go through it together, hands-on, at your computer.

Same as everything else I do — I come to you. 🙂

Spring means better light, more time outdoors, and a lot of you asking about cameras — so we're kicking off a proper Camera Season on Friday Focus. Lenses, filters, compacts, action cams, the lot. Starting with the big one: Canon or Nikon?

📷 Canon EOS R10 — $1,499 body only ($1,649 with kit lens). Fast autofocus, great for action and wildlife.
📷 Nikon Z50 II — $1,749 body only ($1,999 with kit lens). Loved for its colour science and ergonomics.

The verdict? If price is the deciding factor, Canon gets you into mirrorless for less. Got a bit more budget and want that classic Nikon feel? The Z50 II won't disappoint. Honestly — it's Ford vs Holden. Pick a system, learn it, and you'll get great photos either way.

🎬 Next up: lenses, and why the kit lens isn't always the right call.

Spring's here, which means better light and a lot of you asking me about cameras 📸

So I'm kicking off "𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧" on Friday Focus — a proper multi-part series covering cameras, lenses, filters and more.

First up tomorrow: Canon vs Nikon. I've been Canon since a film EOS 5 I picked up in London back in 2000, so I'm keeping myself honest on this one.

Friday Focus, tomorrow. See you then. 👀

𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧? 📧

I've had more calls in the last few months about Bigpond email than just about anything else. It stops syncing. It locks people out. Passwords stop working for no apparent reason. And trying to sort it out over the phone with Telstra? Don't even get me started.

Here's the thing nobody tells you —𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂. The moment you change internet providers, or Telstra decides to change how their email works, you can lose access to an address you may have had for 20 years. All your contacts. All your emails. Gone.

That's why I've been quietly nudging my customers toward Gmail or Outlook (both free) for a while now. They work on any device, any internet provider, and they're not going anywhere. Solid as a rock compared to ISP emails.

The good news — switching isn't as scary as it sounds. I can set up your new email address, move your contacts across, and make sure your important accounts (bank, Medicare, etc.) get updated. Most people are surprised how painless it is. And of course, I come to you. 😊

If your Bigpond email has been giving you grief lately, it might be time to have a chat.
