Following on from our post about traffic dropping while rankings stay put, the obvious question is: what do you actually do about it? 🤖

Four things, and none of them are tricks.

Answer the question in the first line, instead of burying it three paragraphs down. Structure the page so a machine can read it. Be specific enough to be worth quoting, because "quality service" cannot be cited but a real number can. And keep it current.

It is the same discipline as good SEO, just less forgiving of waffle.

Have a look at the first line on your main service page. That is usually where the problem shows up.

Here is a question worth asking any agency before you sign: who is actually going to be doing the work? 🤔

At a lot of places, the person who sells you the job is not the person who does it, and there is an account manager in the middle passing messages both ways.

We keep it simple. Small senior team, all in-house, and you deal directly with whoever is doing your job. It is harder to scale. It is much easier to get right.

Has your website traffic dropped even though you are still coming up first on Google? 📉

You are not imagining it, and nothing is broken.

Google now answers a lot of searches right there on the results page. People read the answer and never click through to anyone's website. Your ranking is fine. The visit just does not happen any more.

We checked a sample of our own client sites last week. Most were down on traffic year on year. Not one had lost rankings.

Looking for an SEO agency? These five questions will sort them out pretty quickly. 🕵️

1. What would you do first, and why?
2. Who is actually doing the work?
3. What will you report, and how often?
4. What happens if I want to leave?
5. What would make you tell me not to bother?

That last one is our favourite. An agency that will talk you out of something they sell is one that will be straight with you later.

"Should we do SEO or Google Ads?" 🤔

It is the question we get asked most, and the real answer is that they solve different problems.

Ads get you visible today, and stop working the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build and then keeps going.

If you need the phone to ring this month, that is ads. If you are building something for the long haul, that is SEO. Most businesses doing well are running both.

Twelve months ago Mystery Kits Australia was getting around 1,500 visits a quarter. In the three months to mid August it was more than 10,000. 📦

Sessions 1,475 to 10,456. Users 856 to 7,562. Page views 8,971 to 37,922, comparing 14 May to 13 August against the same window last year.

Being straight about where it came from: they were barely advertising a year ago, and we picked up their Google Ads in December. So most of that is paid traffic that was not there before.

What we are more pleased about is that their organic search traffic more than doubled as well, without an SEO retainer running.

A recent build we are proud of. 🏡 New website for Tamworth Custom Builders, who build custom homes across the New England region.

Websites for home builders are a funny brief. The houses photograph beautifully, but nobody picks a builder off a photo. They are deciding who they trust to be in their life for the next two years.

So this one leads with the process rather than the gallery. What the first conversation covers, how a sloping block changes the job, what happens between signing and slab. The houses are still there, they are just not doing all the work.
