Our submission for the open brief «Redesign The Green Dot symbol» initiative launched by &

For 30 years we have regularly seen The Green Dot symbol, however few of us are aware of its meaning. Regularly confused with the recycling symbol, The Green Dot doesn't indicate a product is recyclable — it merely means the company or brand has joined The Green Dot Scheme. This means they have made a financial contribution to a recycling system and the recovery of waste in Europe. This confusion around the symbol's meaning is resulting in huge amounts of recycling contamination.

We have reimagined The Green Dot as an abstract symbol that combines the general shape of an uppercase letter "G" with a tree growing from the center. This abstract symbol follows a circular path that communicates the continued contribution a company makes to the recovery of waste.
