Wet phone? Don’t put it in rice!

It’s one of the most common pieces of advice, but it can actually make things worse.

Rice doesn’t remove the water trapped inside your phone.

It can also leave behind dust and tiny particles that end up inside charging ports and other components.

Instead:

• Turn it off immediately. If it’s already off, leave it off.
• Don’t press buttons to “check if it still works”.
• Don’t plug it in or try to charge it.
• Remove the case, SIM card and any accessories.
• Gently dry the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth.
• Hold the phone so any water can drain out of the ports naturally. Avoid shaking it, as this can push water deeper inside.
• Leave it in a dry, well-ventilated place while you arrange to have it checked.

Avoid hairdryers, ovens, microwaves or direct heat, as heat can damage internal components.

The biggest risk after water gets inside a phone isn’t always the water itself. It’s corrosion that starts developing afterwards, even if the phone seems to be working normally.

The sooner it’s properly cleaned and inspected, the better the chance of preventing long-term damage and saving your data.
