Tasmanian students, teachers and school staff may have had personal information stolen in a global cyberattack on Canvas, the learning platform used by the Department for Education, Children and Young People and TasTAFE.

Canvas owner Instructure confirmed user data was exposed, including names, email addresses, student ID numbers and user messages, but said it had no evidence passwords, birth dates, government IDs or financial details were taken.

Extortion gang ShinyHunters claimed responsibility and listed Instructure on its dark web leak site with a "pay or leak" ultimatum, while DECYP said it had not been told whether Tasmanian data was obtained.

DECYP said Canvas was running normally, learning had not been disrupted and Tasmanians should stay alert for scams while investigations continue.

❗ Scam warning ❗

The AFP is warning of an emerging scam trend involving callers pretending to be AFP investigators.

Scammers use their intended victims’ emails to submit fake cybercrime reports to ReportCyber. After the victim is notified of the report, the scammer then rings them pretending to be an AFP investigator, but with the intent to steal their cryptocurrency/seed wallets.

Investigators warn if you do receive a call from police about a cybercrime report, we will never ask you to:
Β· Provide access to your cryptocurrency accounts, wallets, or bank accounts.
Β· Provide cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases.
Β· Transfer funds or assets to another account or wallet.
Β· Provide login details or personal information relating to any accounts.

If the caller asks you to do any of the above, it’s likely a scam. Stop contact immediately and report it to ReportCyber or your local police station.

If you are unsure whether the call is legitimate, hang up and call the police agency back on the phone number listed on their official website.

If you receive a message about a cybercrime report you did not submit, or did not authorise another person to make on your behalf, please report it to ReportCyber.

Time to stop ignoring this message!
On October 14th, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10.

What does that mean?

In a nutshell, there will be no more updates for Windows 10, most importantly security updates. When there are no security updates, vulnerabilities can be taken advantage of and your system is no longer secure. If you are connecting to the Internet, you need to be running a supported version of Windows.

Drop in and chat to our friendly techs about your options. We can guide you on the best upgrade path to keep you safe.
We’ll help you choose the best way forward for you.
We’re here to help, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm at 48 Percy St, Devonport.

Year 7 students have 3D-printed a hand as part of a school project for their friend and peer, Lois Agnello.

The open-source design for Lois's hand was provided by Australian-based charity Free 3D Hands, which designs, develops and creates 3D-printed assistive devices for free.

The students, who aim to print limbs for other kids in need, will be representing Australia at the Be the Change Youth Summit later this year in Tokyo.
