At N**E, we have a soft spot for old photographs of studios... They capture that meeting point between human curiosity, technology and the desire to listen carefully... and at N**E // WE LOVE LISTENING //
We found this picture on a site that colourises old black-and-white photographs from across different industries...It's the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. Founded in Warsaw in 1957, Studio Eksperymentalne Polskiego Radia became one of Europe’s earliest centres for electronic and electroacoustic music and a rare island of artistic freedom behind the Iron Curtain... At its heart was the pictured 6 × 6-metre “Black Room,” designed so composers and engineers could actively modify the physical architecture of the studio. Its walls featured rotating panels that were reflective on one side and sound-absorbing on the other, allowing the room’s reverberation time to be altered physically.... work was "contsructed:" with oscillators, filters, tape loops and razor-blade edits long before plug-ins, presets or an Undo button... One of the studio’s earliest works was Włodzimierz Kotoński’s Study for One Cymbal Stroke... which began with exactly that: a single recorded cymbal strike, transformed and reassembled into an entire composition.

🙏for the shout out
“I brought the N**E ribbons on the road because I love the way they sound on overheads. I can crank them in the PA and the cymbals never get harsh, only bigger. That’s why I like my N**ES.”

At N**E // We Love Listening and this includes hearing from N**E owners because it keeps us connected to the coalface of how our microphones are actually being used. We most often see N**E at work in studios so it’s particularly nice to see a pair of N**E Rectangles getting out and about overhead at Red Rock and to hear exactly why they make sense in a live context.

Crackin’ pic: The Grateful Dead played in front of the main PA (Wall Of Sound era), which also allowed them to hear themselves REALLY WELL.
That created an obvious challenge. How do you prevent an enormous wall of loudspeakers from flooding every open vocal microphone?
Look Closely // differential microphone arrays - The two signals combined with opposite polarity.I don’t reckon that kind of ground-up systems thinking exists in large-scale live music anymore. It’s not that innovation has stopped in fact the tools have become astonishing. But is festival sound now is a homogenised machine? It definitely delivers consistency and it must.

The truly extraordinary listening experiences now tend to happen where sound can be designed as part of the work itself: theatre, immersive installations and experiential spaces. Places where sound gets time, architecture and a genuine creative investment. 🎧
At N**E, We Love Listening.

N**E Rectangles are warm, luscious and tame most metallic or sibilant source so we thought we’d share this
There’s a little bit of a groundswell of folks doing one-mic songs
At N**E, we love listening – so absolutely bring it!
Amid all the noise about what humanity still brings to the table, this feels real: people doing extraordinary stuff…Shout out to Dan Slater (Melbourne musician/educator) for a cracker performance/video production w/very cool production workflow insights

Built like a tank. Sounds full of goodness. 🎙️
The N**E 414 tips its hat to the golden era of condenser microphone design // channelling the character of the classic EB/BULS lineage without the vintage price tag.

Inside: a Class A discrete, transformer-coupled circuit, dual-diaphragm capsule, five selectable polar patterns w/Pad/HPF

Outside: satisfyingly weighty, properly solid and ready for serious studio work.
Expect a big, warm and subtly darker ’80s character, smooth through the top end, but still alive and present. A versatile choice for drums, guitars, amps, percussion, acoustic instruments and grand piano.

★★★★★
“Rather than describe them as warm or deep or clear or full… I’ll just say they sound ‘full of goodness’.”
★★★★★
"Overall I like the N**e 414 better (than our AKG 414 XL II), especially if you gently nudge the top end. There were 3-4 other engineers in the control room, and they were pretty blown away."
★★★★★
"Silky top end is so good for those super high frequency sources and for taming the acoustic string noise without killing any of the sparkle."

Available individually or as matched pairs, supplied in a sturdy flight case with a custom suspension mount.

Big horn energy from the golden age of cinema sound 🎞️🔊
This is the Klangfilm Euronor a German cinema loudspeaker system from the sound-on-film era, when engineers were chasing bigger, clearer, more immersive playback for 35mm cinema. Klangfilm sat inside the Siemens / AEG world, right at the point where film, electro-acoustic engineering and theatres all started getting very serious about sound reinforcement systems.
Crazy-Massive 4m high horn loading….Lab-coat levels of commitment… 🧪 …Honestly … we’re not saying modern audio engineers need to start wearing white lab coats again but we’re also not “NOT” saying it … 👨‍🔬… At N**E, we love the beautiful madness of audio history // big ideas, bespoke engineering to pursue … does it sound extraordinary?

So we’re always hugely grateful when N**E owners share testimonials, social posts, studio shots and videos of their microphones out in the real world // at the coalface of music production. Big thanks to ⁨⁩ for this very cool unboxing of his new N**E FET47. And what you don’t get every day is an unboxing video that closes out with a vocal sample...Very tidy.
