Hi Folks,

Another reason to backup your computer!!!!!

Top Stories: Australians forced to pay as latest ransomware virus is 'unbreakable', security expert says
Australians are paying thousands of dollars to overseas hackers to rid their computers of an unbreakable virus.
There has been a rise in the number of people falling victim to the latest version of an encryption virus which hijacks computer files and demands a ransom be paid to restore them.
Known as "ransomware" it infects computers through programs and credible-looking emails. Full Story: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-09/australians-paying-thousands-after-ransomware-virus-infection/6683618

I took a look at the Windows 10 technical preview, and walked away very disappointed with Windows 10 backup. It's just as broken as Windows 8.1's, with no fix in sight.

It's time to back up your computers, people!!

I have two dead hard drives on my desk at the moment. We technicians can rebuild most computers with new hard drive and reload the software however we can't guarantee to get your files back.

Your files being: your tax stuff, your photos, your assignments, your reports, your digital artworks, your music and your movies.

Please buy an external hard drive ($100.00 from Dick Smiths Electronic) and back up your computer. Back up means two copies one on the computer and one on the external hard drive.

If you value it ALWAYS have two copies.

I have just heard that the scammers have started emailing people saying they are from Centrelink or MyGov asking people to confirm their details. DON'T!! Centrelink and MyGov will only ever email to you to say log onto their website. Don't click on links in the email, do a Google search to go to the MyGov web site yourself rather than the one the scammer provided. Add to this warning emails from Medicare, any bank, and the RMS.

Please please if your photos are important to you have two copies, one on a computer and one on an external hard drive. If you only have them on an external hard drive and it crashes it could be as much as $2000.00 to have them recovered in a clean room laboratory in Sydney.

Following up on my last post about dodgy emails, I just got an email claiming to be from Apple but the sender of the email was my own email address. That is suspicious to start with but the rest looked like Apple so I clicked on the link which asked me to confirm my Apple account details.

The web page that opened looked like a normal Apple account detail screen except that the web address was "weblink" and didn't mention Apple and Apple always start by showing you the basic information they have about you, ie your email address. This one didn't so I closed the web site but if I had submitted my details so unknown person would have all the information they would need for identity theft.

Please be really careful when dealing with your emails.

I want to let you all know about UPSs (Uninterruptible Power Supplies). Many people buy a surge protector power board when they buy a computer but they only do half a job. Every time a power spike goes through the power board it actually becomes less effective. The answer is a UPS, it is a large battery which absorbs power spikes and then if the power goes out or just dips it continues to provide battery backup. Obviously this is more important for a desktop more than a laptop but if you value your data and you're not always there to unplug your computer when thunder storms pass by $150 for a UPS is a cheap insurance policy. And Yes, I sell and install them so let me know.

Hello again, I had a call this afternoon from a gentleman who was very upset because his 2 terabyte external hard drive filled with all his favourite movies had been accidentally formatted. Please remember "If you value your data/films/photos/music always have two copies" I don't know if I'll be able to help him and he will call me back when he decides what he wants to do.

I have just returned from Bulahdelah where I replaced a faulty motherboard. I am on a cloud at the moment, everything went smoothly except that the windows installation as corrupted. So another trip out to Bulahdelah is on the books.

If you receive an email from the RMS or RTA informing you of a speeding ticket delete it immediately. The RMS never informs drivers of infringements via eMail. This is a scam attempting to access your private details.
