New EU green claims rules are coming. Is your tourism marketing ready?
Are you working with EU wholesalers, inbound operators or global distributors to sell your tourism experience? Or do you promote your accommodation to European travellers through international platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb?
If so, here’s what you need to know:
From 27 September 2026, new EU rules will come into effect to crack down on greenwashing: the use of vague, misleading or unsupported environmental claims.
This means businesses marketing to European consumers will need to be more careful when using terms such as “sustainable”, “eco-friendly” and “green”.
Environmental claims across your website, ATDW profile, booking listings, brochures, social media and trade materials should be clear, specific and supported by evidence.
As we work a lot in this area, we’ve prepared a simple overview explaining what EmpCo means for Australian tourism businesses and the practical steps operators can take now to prepare.
