In late 2017, the company behind the fitness tracking app Strava released a data visualization project called the Global Heatmap. The map aggregated billions of GPS data points from users logging their runs and bike rides. While it illuminated popular running routes in major cities, it also had a severe, unintended consequence for the military. Analysts zooming in on remote areas in Syria, Afghanistan, and Somalia noticed bright, glowing outlines of jogging paths in the middle of empty deserts. Soldiers deployed to these highly classified forward operating bases had been using smartwatches and fitness trackers to monitor their workouts while running laps around the perimeters of their outposts. The military had originally encouraged troops to use fitness trackers to combat obesity and maintain combat readiness. They never anticipated that the aggregated data would create a glowing map of classified areas. Because soldiers forgot to turn off the location sharing features on their devices, the app tracked their movements and published the data. The heatmap essentially handed anyone with internet access a detailed map of secret installations, outlining the exact patrol routes and living quarters of deployed troops. The 2017 data leak forced the Pentagon to immediately overhaul its policies regarding personal electronics.
