A construction site can look very different once we see it from above.

From the ground, we usually see one section at a time. The aerial view brings those sections together, showing how the structures sit within the development, where the access points are and how work is progressing across the site.

Before we plan the flight, we talk with the engineer or project team about what they need to review. It might be the overall layout, progress in a particular area or a clear visual record they can refer to later.

The drone gives us the perspective. Understanding what the team needs to see is what makes the imagery useful.

Funny thing about aerial work: the best-looking shot isn’t always the most useful one.

Sometimes, it’s the fairly ordinary photo that someone comes back to later because they need to check one part of the site. Other times, it’s the wider view that helps them understand where everything sits.

That’s why we don’t only capture the obvious angles while we’re there. We take the extra shots too, because they may be the ones someone needs later.

If an image helps someone find what they’re looking for, then it was worth taking.

The camera sees more than you think. Sometimes a little too much.

There’s always plenty happening when you’re filming. Lighting, sound, framing, movement, and all those little things that are easy to miss when you’re concentrating on everything else. Once you press record though, the camera tends to pick them up too.

That’s why taking a little time to check the setup before filming can save a lot of fixing afterwards.

Sometimes the easiest edit is simply not having to fix the mistake in the first place.

What a busy day at the Multicultural Jobs Expo.

There were already people waiting outside before the doors opened, and by the time things got underway, the room was full of conversations.

More than 1,500 people came through, with over 80 exhibitors there to meet job seekers. And these weren’t businesses just there to promote themselves. They actually had positions they were looking to fill.

We’ve already heard that one business hired six people from the Expo, and they’re starting work on Monday.

We spent most of the day behind the cameras capturing what was happening around the room. It was great to see so many people come through, and even better to hear that some of those conversations have already turned into jobs.

Sometimes you just need to see things from a different angle.

Not everyone involved in a project can be on site at the same time, but they may still need to see what’s happening.

That’s where these views can be useful.

From above, you can see how the site fits together and get a closer look at areas that might not be as easy to see from the ground.

And really, the drone isn’t the important part.

It’s what you come back with.

Something people can look at, share and refer back to when they need it.

Sometimes a different view is all it takes to make things a little clearer.

Behind the scenes, things don’t always go exactly to plan.

On this shoot, we forgot the clapper board.

Normally, the clap of the board gives us a clear point to line up the audio and video during editing. Without it, we went with the simplest alternative: a hand clap.

It creates the same clear spike in the audio, giving us an easy reference point to find and match later.

It’s a small part of the filming process and something you’d probably never think about when watching the finished video.

But behind the scenes, little details like this help everything come together.

When something doesn’t go to plan, you work with what you have and keep the shoot moving.

In this case, two hands did the job.

Some conversations are worth hearing beyond the room they happened in.

Over the past few posts, we’ve shared some of the advice and experiences that came out of the Multicultural Jobs Expo.

But there’s another part of that story.

Once the event is over and everyone has gone home, what happens to all those useful conversations?

Capturing them means they don’t have to end when the event does.

It’s not simply about having a camera in the room. It’s about recognising the moments worth keeping, whether that’s a piece of advice, someone sharing their experience, or a conversation that could be useful to someone who wasn’t there on the day.

That’s one of the reasons we capture events like the Jobs Expo.

The technology helps record what happened, but the real value comes afterwards, when those conversations can be shared with people who couldn’t be there.

Because sometimes, something said in one room could be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Here’s something worth sharing with anyone who’s ever looked for a job, or is looking for one right now.

Getting through the door is only the beginning.

Paul Bailey, Dr Zakaria Amin and Travis Windsor have spent years helping people find work, and they share some practical advice on getting the most from a Jobs Expo.

Be prepared. Know who you want to speak with. Have your résumé ready. And when you’re there, make the effort to introduce yourself and have a real conversation with employers.

They also highlight something that’s easy to overlook when so much of job searching happens online: the value of meeting people face to face.

For Paul, Zakaria and Travis, it’s not just about turning up. What you do before the Expo, the connections you make on the day and how you follow up afterwards can all make a difference.

It’s good to hear advice that comes from years of helping people find their next opportunity.
