Still have people getting the Microsoft warning of their computer being infected coming up on their screens. It gives you a number to call Microsoft. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER. This is a scam and they will log onto your PC and you will be compromised. If it happens hold your power button for 20 seconds and then restart your PC. If the message continues to come up then call you IT repairer.

If you need a new PC or laptop because you current computer will not upgrade to Windows 11, don't forget we are coming to the end of financial year soon. This is a good time to get great deals on computers at a discounted price. Don't leave it too late remember October is when Windows 10 stops being supported.

So I have started to migrate clients to Windows 11. If there current computer will install Windows 11 thats what we do otherwise they upgrade to a new one instead of spending money on the older one. The good news is we can make Windows 11 look like Windows 10 so you dont have to get used to another new operating system.

Also good news that scams seem to have slowed down again. Be careful when accepting phone calls or emails from institutions. If you are unsure ignore them and call the institution directly.

If you are upgrading from a old spinning type disk to the new Solid State drives, or you are swapping one Solid State drive for a bigger one make sure you ask for the old one back. This can be treated as a backup drive so you put it in the cupboard and can leave it for many decades. The data will still be retrievable as long as the drive isnt damaged.
Scams seem to be picking up again. Remember if you arent sure about a call or an email, call the institution directly and ask if there is an issue. I have also had clients clicking on facebook ads and a Call Microsoft screen comes up on the computer that cannot be closed. If this happens, hold the power button in for 20 seconds until the computer switches off. Then restart and you should be good to go. Run a virus scan on your PC just in case.

So its time to talk about Windows 11. As of October 2025, Windows 10 will no longer be supported so no need to panic just yet. The only real issue is whether your PC or Laptop is campatible with Windows 11. This comes down to the hardware you have.
If your device is compatible then you can either download and install Windows 11 or get a tech to back up your device and do a clean install.
If your device is not compatible then you will need to purchase new hardware. Windows 11 is installed on all new devices. If you are having trouble getting used to Windows 11 there are ways to make it easier to use and more like Windows 10.
So whether you can install Windows 11 or need a new PC, the future is coming and Windows 10 will be unsupported.

URGENT !!!!!
In case you haven't heard yet, an update to Samsung phones just before Christmas is causing them to be stuck on the Samsung logo. Samsung is saying the only way to fix is a factory reset which means all your photos and data will be lost. It is a good idea to have either cloud backup through Google or Samsung on your phone. This way you can restore your phone from the cloud if anything happens. If you don't like cloud backup's then make sure you backup your phone to your PC. Try not to do any phone updates until you know the phone is backed up.

Just wanted to let people know about another scam going around. If you computer starts making a loud noise, and a person starts speaking to you with a pop up on the screen that has a number to ring, don't ring it. Close your computer down by holding the power button for 20 seconds and then call you IT guy to fix the issue. If you call the 1800 number on the screen they will ask for information that could lead to them getting into your bank account or onto your computer.

I visited a client last week who was scammed out of $1500 by a company posing as Telstra. There are so many different scams out there and I had one person comment about the Little Black Book of Scams released by the ACCC. If you need to call Telstra for technical support here is the number: 133933. They don't really advertise this number anymore as they want you to use the app. If any Telstra people give you any other number to ring, don't ring it. If you can visit a Telstra store and they can help you out with password resets etc.

This week I wanted to talk about backups. A lot of people don't have their data backed up. All you need to do is buy an external hard drive and then set up either the windows 7 backup in control panel or buy a program that automatically backs up your data. The other option these days is cloud backup but I find a lot of mistrust from people about the cloud and their data being on there. If you need help to set up you backups, give me a call.

I have noticed over the past month that some clients have updated to Windows 11. I have had to revert a couple back to Windows 10 as one client's printer did not have drivers for Windows 11. It is a good idea to stay on Windows 10 for another year until all of the bugs have been weeded out of Windows 11. If you need help with any technology issues give me a call.

Computers these days come with fast hard drives called SSD hard drives. Unlike the older style these drives have no moving parts.

One of the quickest ways to speed up an older computer is to replace your drive with an SSD drive. I installed one in a laptop that was 11 years old and was able to run Windows 10 on it.

Is your computer running slow ? Do you still have Windows 7 installed. Give me a call and I can fix these issues. Here's what I do, I pick the computer up from you, so you don't have to leave home. I make a full backup of the hard drive so you don't lose any data. I do a clean install of Windows 10 (If you have Windows 7 I can upgrade you to Windows 10 for free). I then copy all you data back onto the computer and install any programs I can that you had before. I then return the computer to you, set it back up and make sure things like printers and internet are working properly. Happy days for everyone.
