Good design isn’t about walking into a room and pretending to have all the answers. Yes, clients engage designers for expertise, ideas and creative thinking, but the best outcomes happen when the process is open, collaborative and built on trust.

“You have to bring something to the client… but it’s not about imposing yourself... it's about working with them, listening, sharing perspectives and shaping ideas together, rather than acting like the expert who knows everything.”

The strongest projects are rarely driven by ego.

They come from collaboration, conversation and a willingness to explore different perspectives together.

Ever walked straight past a sign even though it was “right there”?

It's more often than not a contrast problem.

In wayfinding, colour selection isn’t just about aesthetics. A sign can look beautiful in a design presentation but completely fail once it’s installed in the real world.

Gloss finishes create glare.
Lighting changes everything.
Colours that looked distinct on screen suddenly blend together.
And sometimes the contrast simply isn’t high enough for people to read comfortably.

This is where LRV (Light Reflectance Value) contrast comes in. Signage needs a minimum contrast difference to improve readability and accessibility, particularly for people with low vision.

But good wayfinding isn’t about ticking a compliance box.

It’s about understanding how people move through a space, what they notice, what they miss, and how materials, lighting and finishes all work together in the built environment.

Because if people can’t confidently navigate a space, the signage hasn’t done its job, no matter how good it looks.

It’s one of those details most people never think about… until it doesn’t work.

Wayfinding has become a core part of what we do at Goldi. It just didn’t start that way.

It wasn’t something we chased. It evolved through the work and the relationships.

It came from a genuine interest in the built environment and working closely with architects and designers.

As our Creative Director Golding explains: “I’ve always been drawn to things that feel more meaningful.”

That’s what sets it apart.

It’s not just about signage. It’s about how people experience a space. How they move through it.
How they feel when they’re in it.

And unlike a lot of graphic design, it lasts. It becomes part of the built environment.

That’s where Goldi does its best work.

Good accessibility design is often invisible.

You don’t notice it when a space feels easy to navigate.
When signage is clear.
When information sits exactly where you expect it to.
When an exhibition feels intuitive to move through.

But you definitely notice when it doesn’t.

Accessibility is about far more than compliance. It’s about designing spaces that work better for more people, across different ages, abilities and situations.

In signage and wayfinding, small decisions make a big difference:
• positioning information within natural sightlines
• using strong contrast and legible typography
• reducing glare through material and finish selection
• considering how people actually move through a space

These details help people navigate with confidence, reduce stress and create a more inclusive experience overall.

Because good design isn’t just about how something looks.

It’s about how it works, how it feels and who it allows to participate.

Call for Artists – Art Fair EOI now open

If you’re an artist looking to showcase your work, expressions of interest are now open for the upcoming Gladstone Road Studios Art Fair – a curated community art show celebrating original small works.

This show is themed around Connection, and is an opportunity to nurture just that, between artists, between makers and their community, and between people and art.

Gladstone Road Studios extends an open invitation to the local artist community to explore the ties that bind us to one another, to place, to memory, and to the materials we work with. It's a concept as wide as it is intimate, touching on everything from the relationships we nurture to the unexpected threads that run between seemingly disparate ideas and practices

Whether art is your side project, or your full time job, you are invited to submit 1-3 artwork for this a group show of work that's made to be owned, displayed, and loved.

🗓 EOI closes 1 June

Bringing a creative identity together

Creative UniSQ is the new identity for the University of Southern Queensland’s School of Creative Arts, bringing a diverse range of disciplines under one clear and recognisable look an feel.

The challenge was not just to create something visually strong, but to ensure it worked across everything. From exhibition posters and theatre programs through to social media, email and everyday communications. It needed to be consistent, but never static.

At the centre of the identity is a bold, simple device. The word Creative cut from a solid form, allowing imagery and colour to come through.

It is a deliberate move away from something fixed. Instead, it reflects what creativity actually is. Shaped by people, influenced by ideas and constantly evolving depending on its context.

This approach creates a flexible system that can adapt across disciplines while still feeling cohesive. It gives the School a clear presence, while allowing each area to express its own character.

A strong identity should not limit creativity. It should support it.

Goldi has always been a strong supporter of local artists, regularly opening our studio to showcase smaller, more personal exhibitions.

A new solo exhibition is now open at Gladstone Road Studios.

"The Long Flight Home" by local artist Tanya Ashworth, reflects a journey shaped by unforeseen changes in life. Inspired by the quiet resourcefulness of birds, it explores what it means to keep going when "home" is no longer a fixed place.

Through each piece, the idea of motherhood remains constant: a steady presence, a guiding force, even in unfamiliar skies.

"The Long Flight Home" is not just about returning, it's about keeping home close to you.

With Mother's Day right around the corner, it’s well worth dropping in.

We’re working on something a little different behind the scenes.

A book.

Written by our Creative Director, Angela Golding, 'Exhibitionism' brings together over two decades of thinking and work across galleries, museums and cultural institutions.

At its core is a simple but often overlooked idea:
exhibitions are not passive displays. They are experiences.

Experiences that shape how people feel, what they remember, and how they connect with stories, spaces and each other.

The book explores the role identity plays in this. Not as decoration, but as the structure that holds an exhibition together and gives it a place in our memories

It introduces three pillars that sit behind every unforgettable exhibition and makes the case that when these are aligned, exhibitions don’t just attract audiences. They stay with them.

This is not a portfolio. It’s a point of view.

And we’re sharing a first look at the cover here, more to come as the book develops.

Goldi didn’t start as a studio in the traditional sense.

It started with work.

After years working for other studios in Sydney, London and Brisbane, Angela began taking on projects more independently. Not with the intention of building a business, but simply to keep doing good work, in a way that worked around life at the time.

What started as freelance work, often from home, gradually grew. More clients. More projects. More responsibility.

“I didn’t set out to build a studio from the beginning. It just evolved.”

That evolution is still very much part of how Goldi operates today.

Practical. Responsive. Built on relationships.

Not forced.
