With the huge increase in ransomeware you could end up with all your important documents and photos lost forever even if you pay.

How do you avoid losing your data?

Don't open email atachments and don't click on links in emails!

Please backup your data. If it is important you. I call it the 3,2,1 rule. Three copies of important files on two different media, one that goes off site.

At the very least copy your photos onto a USB drive and attach it to your car keys.

Not sure about your computer security?

The free upgrade offer to go to windows 10 ends this month. Windows 10 combines the good bits of windows 7 with the best pardts of windows 8.

Unless you have software or hardware that is not compatible I highly reccomend that you upgrade.

If you are running windows 8 or 8.1 you should definitely upgrade as windows 10 brings back the start menu that many people miss.

There are a couple of simple things you can do to make the move to windows 10 simpler. Give me a call if you have any questions

The cryptowall is active again. It comes as a zip attachment to an email that looks like it comes from an "official" source. It could be from australia post, the tax office, the police, or someone else that makes you want to open the attachment.

DON'T EVER OPEN THE ZIP FILE!

It will encrypt all your documents, pictures, music. Pretty well all the important stuff on your computer will be unreadable. There would be notes all over your hard disk demanding payment to decrypt your files.

The only way to keep your important files safe is to back them up. Go and buy a couple of big USB drives (32 OR 64 gb) and copy your important photos and other files to both of them.

Throw one into a desk draw, clip the other one onto your keyring. That way if the files on your computer are damaged your files are safe because you have that copy.

Windows 10 is here!

By now you should be getting notices that your computer is ready to install windows 10.

It is a fantastic upgrade, especially if you are unhappy with windows 8.

The upgrade has gone smoothly for almost everyone but I recommend if you are using any antivirus software you should uninstall it before you upgrade to windows 10.

Once you have upgraded download the latest version of your antivirus, or you can just use windows defender, the antivirus program built into windows 10.

Please be very careful with your emails!

NEVER open .zip attachments this is the way that some really nasty malware is getting into your system.

Also be careful with email that says it is from the government, a bank, or is sent to multiple recipients. They have links that also can cause you grief.

Think before opening a link or attachment. You could end up with all your documents and pictures encrypted and lost forever

If you are trying to download a program please don't just Google "download program name" and click on the first item on the list. The people who peddle malware have started conning end users. If you are not careful you will end up downloading a whole lot of annoying rubbish.

Check that you are going direct to the software manufacturer and not one of the scam sites. If you want to download iTunes, go directly to apple.com.au. If you want adobe reader, go to adobe.com.au

If the site boasts "free download" it is almost certainly a scam site.

The holidays are over and you have uploaded your photos to your computer. Time to think about backing them up so you wont lose them if you have some problems with your computer.

You can use Picassa from Google to easily back them up to DVDs.

Not sure how to do it? send me an email at [email protected] and I will send you a step by step guide. I will give the first 10 people who contact me a free disk wallet to store your photo backups in

Just replaced the power supply for a laptop. When the power came back on the power supply failed. When you turn off your laptop it is a good idea to unplug it from the wall.
