When comparing SSDs to HDDs in terms of data security, it's clear to see which choice is better. While SSDs are less fragile and can read files faster, HDDs are better for data recovery, as well as being easier to repair. HDDs also come with the upside of being cheaper than SSDs.

When using USB drives, make sure to use the "Safely Remove USB" option before ejecting your USB.

Not doing so can harm your USB stick or potentially damage your device and having the data unrecoverable. Yanking the USB out while it's writing data can corrupt and harm the USB performance.
As USB flash drive requires constant power to process all operations, suddenly removing it will lead to performance degradation.

Note: If you are using Windows 10 (Windows 10 version 1809), it has a quick removal feature. This means you don't need to use the "safely remove" option if your USB is not writing any data. However, we still recommend doing so as a precaution.

Clicking delete on your HDD doesn't mean that the file is deleted off the harddrive permanently. Clicking delete only removes the pointer that's pointing to the data (0's and 1's).

Someone who's more technical will be able to recover those deleted files.

So if you are planning on selling, donating or binning your harddrives consider using a harddrive wipe software. You can also do so manually by copying large amounts of dummy data and deleting them, repeating this process several times. This can be very time consuming.

If you're binning your drives consider smashing it with a hammer before throwing it away. 🔨
