It’s funny how you don’t realise the weight you’re carrying until it finally lifts. Being low on hay is its own kind of stress… then organising more hay is another layer of stress again. But the moment it’s finally stacked away in the shed, you can breathe properly for the first time in weeks.

Here’s a look at a day of hay-carting for us. Loading, trucking, and stacking dry hay from 11am right through to 1am. We finished with just enough time for me to take the final photo before the rain arrived.

Watching the shed slowly fill, load by load, is one of the most satisfying sights of the year.

With EzyBeef, you can record it all right in the paddock. No double-handling, no forgotten notes - just clear, organised data you can rely on.

Designed on-farm, built for efficiency, ready to streamline your operation.

Here is our camp oven popcorn - like most things on the farm, this is a taking a few iterations to perfect.

Of course we now have summer fire restrictions so we will put this on hold until the autumn break next year.

Don't worry, I won't make a mess. it will look tidy when it is finished.

Remember all those maintenance jobs that you have been looking at and recording all season? Well, now that your calendar is clearing up they are all showing up in the EzyBeef app as jobs that you could do this week.

This is a great read but especially the line that “You’re in the food business - people have to eat”.

When it comes to selling Australian beef to the world, few have a track record like Richard Rains.

The man who convinced the burger chain famous for its "All American Beef" slogan to buy Australian beef shared a wealth of insights to an attentive and appreciative audience at the 2025 Young Beef Producers Forum at Roma last week.

We’re building EzyBeef, a platform for managing cattle and farm operations. We love working with regional businesses and software providers to create useful integrations. If your service connects with EzyBeef or the same audience, let’s explore opportunities together!

Out in the paddock, there’s always plenty to stay on top of and that is exactly why we built the EzyBeef app.

Every visit means checking feed requirements, counting the cattle, and making sure everyone is walking, eating, and looking healthy. You’re constantly assessing body condition, keeping an eye on the pasture and soil, checking water, and spotting any maintenance jobs that need attention. And of course… recording it all so nothing gets missed.

EzyBeef brings these everyday tasks together in one place, making it easier to track your herd, monitor your paddocks, and stay organised throughout the season.

Built for farmers, shaped by real farm work.

Making it look easy when checking water on a hot day.

On a beautiful, drizzly spring morning, these autumn-drop calves are finally starting to look happy or at least they are making me happy with their form.

It’s been a tough autumn and an even tougher winter here, but the spring growth has been fantastic. And with today’s rain, we might just squeeze out another week of green before summer sets in.

Anyone interested in a weekly update on cattle markets?

I put something like this together every few day for internal use and perhaps it is time to publish.

The table is high prices reported from the USA this week.

It shows a slight drop in heavy steers, which are now below weaners on a $/kg basis for the first time in a year. If this trend continues into next week, it could signal that heavy steers have peaked or at least "Seasonally Peaked".

Price note: They sell in CWT (cents per 100 pounds). Just for reference, 1 CWT ≈ 45.36 kg if you want to compare directly with $/kg.

Prices are still roughly twice the $/kg of Australian prices . That’s mostly because the higher costs get passed on to the retail market. Over here, Coles and Woolworths won’t raise mince prices much, so we don’t see the same effect at the supermarket.

I’m still trying to figure out exactly how McDonald’s and other fast-food chains (around 60% of the USA beef market) absorb the higher costs. My best guess: they mix the meat and lower the quality to manage price increases.

Looking ahead, the USA export market will continue to support our prices, taking all the meat it can from Australia and Canada. This won’t last forever, but for now, it’s keeping our prices elevated.

The latest data is in from the Australian Feedbase Monitor, and it reflects what we are all seeing on the ground pasture: biomass for June 2025 is tracking below the long-term average of 1382 kg/ha in our area, sitting at 897 kg/ha (Total Standing Dry Matter TSDM).

At EzyBeef, we’re building tools to help you respond quickly to changing conditions from monitoring pasture and livestock performance to making data-informed decisions that support profitability and sustainability.

Take a look at the Fodder Calculator at https://fodder.ezybeef.com.au/

This is a tool we've built for ourselves and you're welcome to use it. Make sure you send us any suggestions or modifications you’d like to see.

And let us know how conditions are tracking at your place, and what you’re doing to manage the season.

We’ve been quiet on the recent updates regarding cattle emissions.
If you haven’t seen it yet, take a moment to read this ABC article explaining how outdated science and broad global metrics have inflated emissions estimates by 15 times or more for Australian beef systems:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06-24/grain-fed-cattle-emissions-lower-than-previous-estimates/105449206

The longstanding Moe & Tyrrell method for estimating methane emissions will soon be replaced by a new equation, supported by direct measurements conducted here in Australia.

We hope further research and acceptance of methane’s shorter-term lifecycle will lead to wider adoption of the GWP* method for converting methane to CO₂ equivalent emissions. Unlike the current GWP100 method, GWP* distinguishes between warming caused by ongoing methane emissions and total emitted mass, addressing a critical weakness in the older approach.

If you have questions, please ask. In the meantime, check out this chart comparing the two estimates based on 1000kg of pasture:

The old system of Moe & Tyrrell + GWP100 estimates nearly 8 tonnes CO₂ equivalent due to methane overestimation and a poor conversion to CO₂ equivalent for accounting purposes.

The New Australian Equation + GWP* shows a more realistic and measured figure of just 52 kg CO₂ equivalent for the same feed intake.

This comparison clearly illustrates how updated science provides a far more accurate and significantly lower emissions estimate for Australian beef systems.
