Did you know one in six Australians experience hearing loss?
If you work with someone who has hearing loss, communicating effectively can make a big difference in helping them feel included. Many people hesitate to start conversations simply because they’re unsure of what to do or are worried about making a mistake. The good news is there are some small things you can do that can greatly improve communication.
A person who experiences hearing loss may rely on lip reading and visual cues to help them understand what's being said during a conversation. Some general suggestions for talking face to face with a colleague who has hearing loss include:
• Make sure your face is well lit. Don’t stand in front of a window because the backlight might shadow your face.
• Allow your colleague to always see your face directly. Don’t look around or drop your head, don’t eat while talking, and don’t cover your face with your hand.
• Keep eye contact. Don’t talk to them if they are walking away from you, or as you walk out of the door or from another room.
If you're unsure how to best communicate, just ask, your colleague will appreciate the effort. These small actions can create a more supportive and accessible workplace where everyone feels valued.
