Dennis Scammell, a Vietnam veteran and service member of the Greensborough RSL Sub-Branch since 1990, was recently reunited with the armored personnel carrier (APC) he first drove and later commanded during his service in Vietnam from 30 April 1966 to 27 April 1967.
Dennis and his wife, Bernadette, visited the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Museum at Simpson Barracks, Macleod, to see the APC, which has been fully restored by volunteers led by David Key.
Dennis was in a lead APC during the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966 and remains grateful to have come through the battle physically unharmed. Sitting once again in the driver’s seat of callsign 32B brought back vivid memories of that day—memories that have never left him.
As the sixtieth anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan approaches, Dennis will pause to remember a mate who lost his life in the battle, along with the friends who served beside him and have since passed away.
