My latest Substack is up: The King’s Speech: When a Monarch Sounded More Republican Than the Republic.
A British king went to Congress and, with impeccable manners, ended up reminding America why it invented checks and balances in the first place.
Charles didn’t need to scold anyone. He just praised Congress, democratic restraint, and constitutional tradition at a moment when much of American politics seems increasingly impatient with all three.
That’s the irony at the heart of the piece. The country founded in rebellion against a crown now needed a monarch to gently remind it that legislatures matter, institutions matter, and republics are not meant to become personality cults with flags.
Anyway, here’s the latest.
