"AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined."

Nandan Nilekani, co-founder and chairman of Infosys, said on Wednesday, that India needs artificial intelligence (AI) applications that benefit all citizens, instead of businesses competing to develop large language models (LLMs).

Speaking at a people+AI and EkStep Foundation event in Bengaluru, Nilekani said, “The Indian path in AI is different. We are not in the arms race to build the next LLM; let people with capital, let people who want to pedal ships do all that stuff… We are here to make a difference and we aim to give this technology in the hands of people.”

With tens of billions invested in AI last year and leading players such as OpenAI looking for trillions more, the tech industry is racing to add to the pileup of generative AI models. The goal is to steadily demonstrate better performance and, in doing so, close the gap between what humans can do and what can be accomplished with AI.

As AI becomes more powerful, it faces a major trust problem. Consider 12 leading concerns: disinformation, safety and security, the black box problem, ethical concerns, bias, instability, hallucinations in LLMs, unknown unknowns, potential job losses and social inequalities, environmental impact, in...

In the past, cloud computing was primarily seen as a cost-cutting measure, particularly for Indian companies seeking to reduce their infrastructure expenses. Moreover, organizations had reservations regarding data privacy in the cloud and were uncertain about the applicable regulations. However, the current scenario has undergone a significant transformation.

Recent reports indicate that nearly 80 per cent of businesses now utilize the cloud for data and analytics. Furthermore, 78 per cent of companies have migrated over 30 per cent of their data to the cloud, and 58 per cent are actively shifting new workloads to this platform.

Over the last few months, many Indian organizations have further solidified their cloud base. According to Gartner’s latest prediction, Indian firms are expected to boost their investments in security measures until 2024, which will be primarily driven by the need for legacy IT modernization using cloud technology, the growing demand for digital platforms in the industry, changes in regulatory requirements, and the ongoing trend of remote or hybrid work setups.

We should not forget that humans are the creators of AI, AI has not created humans. Machines don't steal jobs if they aren't used indiscriminately to do so. Machines don't kill unless they are used as weapons. Nor do machines suffer or empathize. Artificial Intelligence is, in the end, a mirror of ourselves. If we're afraid of where it's going, it's actually because we're afraid of ourselves.

As India is adopting artificial intelligence (AI) proactively, it is important to understand that it is not about just using the technology. It is about embracing it by first creating a shift in the mindset. Leaders need to draft a plan for the proper alignment of the technology with their future goals, endorse AI initiatives, and take every step strategically. Moreover, organizations must evaluate how this transformation affects their workforce. Supporting employees in transitioning to new roles and providing upskilling opportunities are steps toward mitigating any adverse effects on the organization.
