Today, on World Palliative and Hospice Care Day, we reflect on how far we've come. Palliative care in New Zealand began with the support of local communities, volunteers, and funding to provide compassionate, holistic care for adults facing terminal illness.

North Haven Hospice started in 1985 as a volunteer organisation in the former Superintendent’s house at Whangarei Hospital (pictured). Guided by the late Mr. Bob Spencer, a retired surgeon, and a dedicated team of volunteers, we quickly became a vital service in the community.

In 1996, we relocated to Tikipunga, where local Kaumātua turned the first sod of earth. Over the past three decades, we've continued to grow in response to the needs of our community. Today, nearly 100 staff work from our Hospice base, providing care, and through our charity shops across Northland.

As we look back, we also look forward with the same spirit of compassion and community support that started it all.

Thank you all for being part of our journey 💛

Paramedics are uniquely placed to provide frontline 24/7 care for people nearing the end of life, yet the profession is repeatedly overlooked in healthcare funding, workforce planning and palliative care related policy.

On this International Paramedic's Day, Palliative Care Australia and the Australasian College of Paramedicine have joined forces to improve access to and delivery of high-quality palliative care throughout Australia.

How beautiful for the family

One of the most beautiful & intimate ways to get involved in farwelling a loved one.

A raw coffin is intimidating & confusing to a lot of families who see it in our show room but can also be turned into a beautiful work of art like the stunning coffin we had today that was painted with the aboriginal flag & decorated by family members.

It’s not for everyone, but it’s such a beautiful & unique way for families to get involved.
