♻️ Hume City Council and our community don't need another bin.

In May 2025, Hume City Council became the first Victorian council to oppose a separate glass-only kerbside bin, and we've continued to advocate for practical recycling solutions that work for residents.

Instead of introducing a costly fourth bin, we are asking the Victorian Government to focus on expanding the Container Deposit Scheme to accept more glass items, including wine and spirit bottles.

It's a smarter, more efficient solution that improves recycling without adding pressure to household budgets.

A separate glass-only bin would mean:
💰 higher costs
🚛 more traffic and trucks
🌏 more emissions.

We know there are better ways to improve recycling than adding another bin to every household.

🐦‍⬛ The risk of H5 bird flu in pets is extremely low, but it's still important to take simple steps to keep them safe.

Help reduce the risk to your pets:

🐕‍🦺 Keep dogs on a lead around native wildlife
🐈 Keep cats indoors where possible
🚫 Avoid handling or approaching wildlife

If you come across sick or dead wildlife, do not touch it with your bare hands.

If you suspect H5 bird flu in birds, mammals, poultry or other captive birds, report it immediately by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or to DEECA online.

Hume City Council extends its deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the devastating events in Nepal.

Hume is home to a proud Nepali community, and we know this tragedy will be deeply felt by many residents with family, friends and loved ones in the affected areas.

Here's a look at some key decisions from this week's Council Meeting:

🤖 Submission to the Federal Inquiry into Artificial Intelligence and Data Centres:
Council will urge for stronger culturally appropriate community consultation, more clarity around data centre developments, local employment priorities, and a local community infrastructure fund.
The submission will also call for a national moratorium on new centres while inquiries take place, and include Hume-specific examples and community experiences.

🏘️ Planning application for multiple dwellings at 88–90 Brook Street, Sunbury
After considering the application and community objections, Council resolved to issue a Notice of Refusal to Grant a Planning Permit for the proposed development.

🎖️ Renaming of Tullamarine Community Hall
The facility will be renamed the Tullamarine War Memorial Hall. Signage and marketing materials will be updated to ensure the community is informed of the change.

🚧 Duplication of Somerton Road
Council will write to Victorian Government Ministers seeking a commitment in the 2027-28 State Budget to fund and deliver the duplication of Somerton Road between Roxburgh Park Drive and Mickleham Road, including confirmation of construction timeframes.

🌳 Action to address illegal dumping at Woodlands Historic Park
Council will ask the Victorian Government to extend the boundary of Woodlands Historic Park to Oaklands Road and implement measures to address illegal dumping and inappropriate vehicle access, including fencing, barriers, signage and surveillance.

Our Community Transport service supports eligible residents who may find it difficult to access transport due to age, health, mobility, financial challenges, or limited public transport options.

The service offers affordable, door‑to‑door transport to help people:
🛍️ get to local shopping centres
🤝 take part in social and community activities
🏡 stay independent and living at home

Community Transport helps residents stay connected, active, and involved in the community — and families or carers can make enquiries on someone’s behalf.

Community Transport makes it easier to stay active, engaged, and part of the community. Family members and carers are welcome to enquire on behalf of someone too.
