When we're out testing at a job, one of the many things we're looking at is how the cabling has been done. Has it been tucked away properly? And are the appliances receiving power safely. For example: This was at an office we did recently.

As you can see they have two double adapters running off a supplied power-board. We remove these as they don't have a safety switch, meaning if you run anything that uses a lot of current/power, over time it will heat up and melt. Which has been know to cause fires in buildings.

The second photo shows how we fixed the issue, by supplying a multiboard. This allows them to have enough spots to put all their appliances and if they accidentally overloaded it, the multiboard will turn off. Avoiding any big issues. Finally we made sure to run the portable heater directly on the power board supplied.

Do I need to have my appliances Tested and Tagged?

It is every employer's obligation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 to ensure that they provide a safe place of work for their employees.

This includes ensuring that the risk of electric shock from portable electrical equipment and appliances is minimised.

There are substantial penalties for employers and all levels of management where inadequate safety leads to the injury or death of a worker.

Electrical testing and tagging forms a part of your workplace risk management system.

WHAT IS TEST AND TAGGING?

Electrical testing and tagging is the procedure of safety checking for electrical appliances.

Workplaces in Victoria must be able to demonstrate safe systems of work, including electrical safety. Portable appliances such as power tools, extension leads, kitchen appliances, and computers are just a few examples of equipment types that need frequent testing.

The more frequently devices are used, the more likely they are to be poorly handled. This equipment as well as those used in more hostile environmental conditions are often more likely to become electrically unsafe.
