Charity at its core is an expression of global solidarity. It brings people together to build more just and resilient societies, whether through direct giving, volunteering, or collective action. Beyond immediate aid, charity strengthens healthcare, education, cultural preservation, and the protection of vulnerable groups. Today, charity and philanthropy alike are evolving to address the deeper causes of poverty and inequality.

Charitable efforts now influence public policy, fund innovation, and support communities where public services fall short. In fragile regions, they often fill critical gaps where governments cannot.

From traditional giving to strategic philanthropy, charity today is a driving force in social innovation, poverty reduction, and inclusive development.

This year's theme "𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿" highlights that traditional learning is deeply tied to the natural environment, where Elders, children, and communities learn the history, science, and stories of their homelands directly from the land and sky.

Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) is a national celebration of First Nations peoples’ stories, cultures and languages created by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

This year's theme "𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲" celebrates the life-changing power of learning.

The compass today remains a powerful symbol of discovery and direction, with different types of compasses for different purposes and paths. This similarity with learning’s ability to reveal new paths and open up new horizons is a compelling one.

𝗞𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘁 (𝗧𝗮𝗱𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗲) 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 - 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 & 𝙊𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧

The First Peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, including the Traditional Owners of this land, the Wurundjeri woiwurrung people, measure change with an annual cycle of seasons marked by changes in the land, animals, water and sky.

On this land there are seven annual seasons while two non-annual seasons, fire and flood, occur on average, every seven and 28 years.

Today marks the start of the 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘁 when rain continues but the weather becomes warmer. Flax lilies begin flowering. Murnong (yam daisies) are ready for harvesting and the day and night are equally long.

Victoria’s men’s sheds deliver enormous health benefits and a huge social contribution to members and communities across the state.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘀
Men’s sheds have received the same amount of funding since 2012 but our network has tripled in size. Men’s sheds are underfunded and under-resourced.

Men’s sheds are calling for an increase in State Government funding from $1m to $3m per annum from 2027/28 with ongoing indexation.
