Smart lock buying guide — what actually matters and what's just marketing noise. There are four questions worth asking before you spend anything. Most product pages won't answer them directly.
1. Does it work without the internet?
Some locks are entirely cloud-dependent. Power goes out, router dies, you're locked out of your own house — or stuck inside. It happens. Look for a lock that operates locally, with the app as a bonus, not a requirement.
2. What happens in a power cut?
This one surprises people. If it's hardwired into your home automation, what's the backup? Most quality smart locks run on batteries — that's actually the safer option. Check the battery life claim against real-world reviews, not the spec sheet.
3. Can you give a tradie temporary access?
This is genuinely one of the most useful features for anyone mid-reno. Temporary codes, time-limited access, no need to be home. If you're project managing a build from a distance, it's not a convenience — it's a practical necessity.
4. Will it fit your door?
Australian doors are not standard. Older homes especially. Deadbolt centres, door thickness, existing hardware — measure twice before you buy anything. If you're not sure, send us a photo of your current lock with a ruler next to it. We'll tell you what fits.
That's genuinely what matters. Everything else — voice control, colour finish, app design — is nice to have once the basics are ticked.
What's your biggest question about smart locks? Ask below — we'll answer every one.

What if your curtains opened themselves every morning?
We installed this motorised sheer curtain system in a Melbourne home — and now the owner just says "Hey Siri" and the sheers glide open. No remote. No wall switch. Just voice.
The system includes:
✦ Voice control (Siri / Google / Alexa)
✦ Scheduled daily automation
✦ Smart scene integration
✦ App remote access from anywhere
This is what smart living actually looks like — calm, seamless, and built around how you live.

We'd been putting it off for two years. The builder's basic curtain tracks did the job — technically. Every morning we'd pull them back by hand, every evening same thing. It wasn't a big deal. It just quietly annoyed us every single day.
We finally went for it in January. Fabric took the longest to decide — we went with a linen blend, semi-sheer, so the morning light still comes through even when they're closed. The install itself was done in a few hours.
The first scene we set up was a morning one. 7:15am, curtains open slowly. The kids came downstairs and genuinely didn't know what was happening. That reaction was worth it alone.
The tech side of it — honestly barely think about it now. It's just how the room works.
If you're still living with builder tracks, no judgment. But if you've been putting it off the way we did — you might just be one Saturday away from sorting it.
Tag someone who still has their builder curtains up😆

Most builders won't bring this up during your electrical rough-in. Not because they don't know — because it's not their job to.
Here's the thing: before your walls close, running a neutral wire to every switch point costs almost nothing. Fifty dollars of cable, maybe an hour of a sparky's time. It's a five-minute conversation that most homeowners never have — because no one thinks to have it.
After the walls are closed? That same upgrade can cost thousands. Sometimes it's not even possible without tearing plaster.
We're not talking about committing to smart switches right now. Maybe you're not sure if you want them. Maybe you're saving budget for the kitchen. That's completely fine — but running the neutral now means the decision stays yours later. You're just keeping the door open.👐
The rough-in window is genuinely one of those rare moments in a reno where a small call makes a disproportionate difference. We've spoken to enough people on the other side of it to know how often this one comes up.
If you're mid-build right now — or about to be — this is worth a quick conversation with your electrician before the inspection.
Drop your build stage in the comments. We'll tell you if you're still in time. 📲

The best technology does not ask for attention first.
It responds naturally to the way people move, live, and interact with the home.

Our Orbit Series smart switch is designed around that idea.

With proximity radar, the button backlight gently responds as you approach, creating a calmer and more intuitive interaction before touch is even made. More importantly, Orbit is designed for scene-based living — allowing lighting, curtains, and other settings to work together through a single press.

Built for modern living, Orbit supports Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa, with Matter over Thread direct connection, local ex*****on, and a self-organising Thread mesh for a more responsive and future-ready control experience.

Smart living should belong to the architecture.
At ARKLYFE, we believe smart upgrades should never feel added on.

From controls and curtains to automation and integrated living systems, we design smart solutions that feel considered from the beginning.

Why is everyone talking about "Matter over Thread"? 🤔

If you've ever dealt with smart lights that "stop responding" or a system that crashes when the internet is down, you know the frustration.

Here is why Arklyfe leads with Matter-over-Thread:
1️⃣ Local Control: Commands happen inside your home, not the cloud. Instant response, even without internet.
2️⃣ Self-Healing: If one device drops, the network automatically reroutes. Total stability.
3️⃣ Universal Language: Whether you use Apple Home, Google, or Alexa—they all play nice together.
4️⃣ Privacy First: Your data stays in your house. Period.

The future of home automation isn't just "smart"—it's reliable.
